Hi Sachasmom, 

Since the rooster is 50% of your genetics, and roosters are 'cheap' in comparison to females.... if it were me, I would try to get a better rooster to start with.  JMO.  It depends partly on if you want quantity or quality.     I guess too, you could 'split the difference' and start where you are and be on the lookout for an upgraded rooster ASAP.  Good luck with it.   Keep us posted on what you decide and how it progresses. 

So sorry to hear that you lost the other rooster.  Any ideas on the cause?

I'm having second thoughts though....  since there is sort of an excess of roosters in the chicken world...and you have two hens, it is possible that future roosters you would get would have straight combs, and the one you do have isn't really bent...so I agree with the other posters---- just go for it.  

Hello was referred to this thread by another member...I had posted on an older Cream Legbar thread asking for assistance with some sexing.  I am very new to CL.  I hatched out six over this past weekend and thought that it would be very cut and dried to sex them.  I believe I have three that are females, one that is a male and two that I am not sure about.  Could you all help me with the others in question. 

Here is a shot of all six:

From L to R.  I am unsure about the first one, perhaps a boy.  The second one has the white spot and I believe is a boy.  The third, fourth and fifth I believe are my girls.  And finally the one to the far right I just don't know...probably boy?

Here are close ups of first and last.

This is the one to the far left...it is very blonde

Here is the one to the far right.  This one has almost a bluiesh silver look in person.

So now that I have found this long thread I will be going back and reading all the pages.  I have more CL in the 'bator...can't wait to see what I get with them.

So, is the comb a dominant or recessive gene? If in my next gen I only selected for correct comb and leg color, are they going to be carrying the gene for those things?

What color is willow for the legs? And is that gene dominant?

Just trying to do *big picture* breeding here, I hate to have to go fix mistakes later on down the road that I bred in, lol

I had to combine a couple pens here while I am waiting to fix my back chicken coop (Coons. Sigh.) and I think someone had Coccidia? I lost a couple young birds in a couple breeds, they were fine, then dead. The one CL Roo was never very thrifty though. Or it could have been the heat. The remaining birds look fine, but I'm nervous only having one Roo, I always like to have an Emergency Chicken, lol

I think that the twisted comb has to be a ressesive gene.  Otherwise it would have been eliminated  with one round of culling years ago.  Also it wouldn't be listed as deffect in the breed standard if it were a dominate gene. 

The leg color is governed by the Dermal Black Gene [Id].  The dominate gene being for the light color legs, and the resessive being the dark color.  So the leg color should be easy to correct.  The comb type is something that will probabllytake a few generation to breed out.

Sachasmom - I'd breed what you have to see what comes of it unless you have a convenient way to obtain a new rooster. $65 for shipping to me is not too convenient but some can affort that cost. My husband woudl lose his mind given what I've spent on chickens recently. My rooster arrived with a floppy comb which did statghten up a bit and he has hatched some chicks that have seemed to be nice combs and crests on both boys and girls. I beliee that we have birds that share the same genetics and will have crooked, floppy combs, greenish eggs, no crests and all sorts of stuff popping up as we go along. Part of the challenge and fun will be getting the breed consistent. But if some are interested in breeding the white legbars which I personally have no desire to do then I would experiment with him and see what you get.  I think so long as you cull hard it would be interesting to see what he can product until or unless you could do better.  Use the best you can afford I say - it'll be a long time before these guys are APA. He might have some nice traits laying in wait or not...I've had a few requests locally for legbar roosters and I have to sell them off really cheap around here but the shipping is what makes it prohibitive. We are in in for fun, right?

Very cute chick line up.  For sure girl with chipmumk stripes second from right.... the other ones...... hmmmmmmmmm.  

 just checked the bator - best hatch ratio to date.  6 eggs - 4 hatched and 2 are pipping - so far 3 females and 1 male...hoping for more females .   I have 7 that go into lockdown next Thursday and have another 5 (maybe 6 today) that I could stick into the Hovabator today.  SOOOO glad I got two of those Genesis incubators with the humidity reader - my best hatching year ever.  Should I hatch more eggs.......my husband would so kill me but since I moved the brooder outside how will he really know how many chickens I actually have.  Oh yeah he can count to.

now gotta check everyone outside to see how this hot weather is treating everyone.  Yesterday I lost one of the two Marans hens I did not sell.

They make a genesis with the humidity reader??? I want one! I wonder if you can add it to the regular one?

I picked up my CL on my way home from a rabbit show, so no shipping on those guys at least, I think the shipping for my choc orps was like 65?

I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for a better Rooster I guess. I usually like to have 24+ chicks to select a breeding pen from but the cost of these guys sort of shot down that idea!

I think I have eleventy million chicks... Five brooders? Plus the pen of Juvenile birds... This is the part I hate, where you wait for stuff to grow so you can decide if you want it!

They started selling the Genesis with the built in humidity monitor in January. It also has an adjustment for Temperature on the top of it and an internal temperature monitor. It does not look like you can upgrade the old ones--You would have to replace the cover, heater and etc. without hurting the Styrofoam.
