Thanks for posting these guys.  My favorite part about chickens is the new little chicks.  I had a golden CLB cockerel. I love the light colored ones. I am pretty sure that one of the flock in the UK that greenfire got stock from produced all golden cockerels. Now the lines are all mixing though. Kind of a pitty in some ways. :-)

I was hatching Marans earlier this month and my "stupid incubator" die on us at day 11.  I only had one incubator, so out of despiration we put the nine eggs in an electric serving tray lined with towles until we could figure out something better.  We never found anything better.  The temperature swings were huge.  We spiked up to 111 deg and out of fear of rosting them alive on many morning we found we had turned the knobe too low and woke up to room temperature eggs.  Still we had 2 out of 9 hatch right on schedule.  They came out with out any problems and are as healthy as any chicks I have ever seen.  My wife thinks they are both pullets too.

This is worse than counting your chicks before they hatch, it is counting your eggs before they are laid

When I hatched out my Blue Copper Marans, I had 8 eggs under a broody hen.  Only 2 hatched, 1 of each.  So you did as well as my hen with your make shift set up!

eBay policy regarding pre-sales:

If you want to sell presale items, be sure to meet all of the following criteria:

  • Guarantee that the item will be available for shipping within 30 days from the purchase date. Be sure to clearly state this information in your listing.

I think we can probably expect to see pre-sales for Isbar eggs now too since this seller has been bidding on my Isbar auctions. barnie.gif

If the policy is 30 days and this is more like 150 days, shouldn't ebay look at it?

Nice job on the chicks!  Just this morning I got a 7:30am post office call.  My chicks were in.  What chicks?!   I actually hoped for a minute that Greenfire Farms made a shipping error and sent me another batch before I realized who they were coming from.  That months out thing can really be a shock.  So is it worse to count your chicks before they hatch,  or just plain forget you have them coming?!!

Hi Y'all....

If I caught the gist of this, an eBay seller is pre-selling eggs from chickens months in the future??

Is it true or not true that it is wiser to wait a few months after a pullet begins to lay eggs before using those eggs for hatching?  I think I read that at least a few months should go by.... like until the pullet's eggs are her full size -- before using those eggs for hatching.

Flooding the market is the kind of thing that could be detrimental to Legbars in the USA (IMO) as the gold rush begins for some folks to try to cash in.  (I guess Rhodebars and Isbars too, or any rare breed).

I read an article where there are 'propagators' that just try to crank out the breed as many as possible, and then there are breeders who will try to improve the breed.  My point is, I guess, that wise people will look for quality and experience, and the people on this forum who have that will be more successful in the long run.  If someone buys hatching eggs, that are less successful--will they blame the legbars, or will they blame the seller?

Flyingmonkeypoop,  In your post 690-- it echoed what I was thinking about my little ones today.  They seem to have brighter eyes and faster growth etc. than the other chickens I have experienced---so I don't doubt that they are really healthy.  I can only think it is the genetics of this breed--- (maybe the clover helps)  ;O)

The seller has now listed Blue Isbar hatching eggs presale.  You guessed it - $40 per dozen with a 22 week wait.
