Sorry for your losses hugs.gif and I hope the survivors get better soonfl.gif, or at least don't suffer.  watch for infections on the burns.

I guess last sunday one of my coops caught fire and burned down.

there were few survivors. Lionel and Pidgin. my favorites are alive... but i will get to them in a second.

Dad counted 9 dead. there was one that went and hid in the back of one nest box and i found it dead... the straw in the nest under it was scorched (and this was in my other coop that it went to)

There is one other survivor that i am going to have dad and john take care of tonight.... it can't walk. It walks on its 'hocks'  i picked it up and that smell is burned in my nose... its feet are curled up and black. this was an EE but the legs are dead, bone, melted. so i set it near food and water for some peace.

Lionel has swollen feet and melted toe nails.... his spurs are black.... the few times he walks he picks his legs up sooo high.  Him and Pidgin had feathered feet. I think it both saved them but made it worse.  I don't know what to do for them. Pidgin has skin peeling off her feet.  the skin on both is still... alive looking with some scales gone..... Pidgin seems to be doing 'best'  It sounds like dad has been putting neosporin on them all week. Also they don't have tails..... their tails burned off..... all the feathers around their butt are burned off..... and the rest of the feathers are smoke and heat damaged.

This is beyond my understanding of what to do.

Lionel was standing on the snow... which i am sure hurt but keeps the swelling down....

I have placed Lionel and Pidgin in my little chicken tractor with water and scratch and clean straw. If there is medications i can get them today please let me know and i am also posting in the emergencys thread. I know that anything with 'cane' in it can kill them... and i am glad and lucky my dad only was putting neosporin on....

I also have a Cayuga Drake that i put in with them... the other ducks have picked on it bad. he has no feathers on his neck and after picking him up i realized they been keeping him from food and water. I need to find a new home for him, and probably for a few more drakes because i am sure they are figuring out who gets the 2 females...

Even though a week as about passed since they been burned it still looks iffy for Lionel. he is still in shock to me.

This has been a very, very bad winter for chickens.... and very depressing.

I am heart broken Lionel is my oldest chicken. he is just over 4 years old. pidgin is a year younger, but i know she is tough with how she broods alone.

I most likely could be that or something chewed the extension cord for the water heater. I have 2 coops left but are very leaky. trust me i am tempted to rip out the remaining lamps. but the birds are soaked from the weather, most sleep under the lamp during the day. the ones that get frost bite hid under there too.  we always have everything secure and up out of reach. the plywood roof and the cage are fine... but the straw, iglu nest box and tyveck that i used to wrap and insulate the coop all melted and burned. I look and wonder how the 2 survived trapped in there. I plan to ask dad if we can unplug all the coops.... I think them suffering cold, wet and frostbite is a lesser evil than fires. If anything else happens this year i may just give up.

I am So sorry Rachel. I know how hard it is, being away, and having so much go on lately.

You know, we have a coop, it's open all the time, no heat lamps, and we haven't lost one bird all winter. I don't know how cold it get's where you keep yours, or if you have very young birds, but remember, chicken have survived thousand of  years without heat lamps. Mine huddle together on the roosts, and so far, no fatalities (but it IS draft free, no icy winds or rain can get in). We do have a small lamp in there that is on till 9 pm, but that's it.

And, don't give up! There are plenty of us here who can help you get back on your feet. I can send hatching eggs, or hatch some for you. I'm sure there are others who would do the same.

I started off with a LG forced air and egg turner, than got one more from a friend but its not forced air so I just put newly hatched chicks in it. Than my Great Hubby built me a Cabinet one that has 3 shelves with egg turners. I love it the only thing I have to do is add water.  So I put my eggs in the big one and hatch in the smaller one.

You have to decide why you want to hatch and how often, if you only want to do it a few times dont spend a lot and you dont have to go big. If you have a great Hubby like I do he can always make you one, or if your handy ( I'm not) you can always make one.

I do have a Cayuga Drake that needs a new home ASAP.

The other boys of the duck flock have plucked his neck feathers clean.

I have him in with the other 2 chickens for quiet time and access to food and water.... the other ducks were keeping him away from what i can tell of his weight when i picked him up. A few weeks ago everyone was happy and fat.

I am willing to part with 2 more drakes so that there is 2 males and 2 females instead of too many males, cause i am sure once he is gone the next on low on the pecking order will get his tail kicked.

He is free to go to a good home fast but the other 2 drakes I feel are $10 each.

I am not shipping and have also posted him on the Wenatchee Craigslist.

they are raised with chickens and fed chicken feed.

pm or call 509-669- 37 eight four.

I am driving back to pullman monday afternoon. So if anyone between here and there is interested I can try bringing them.

Greg has a superb way of saying just what needs to be said.  I couldn't agree more.

I would just like to add one thing.  As I said before, everyone has a belief system.  According to the Webster-Miriam dictionary, one of the definitions of "religion" is "a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices".  And Dictionary.com says "religion" is "a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects".

Therefore, I suggest in the interest of total equality and complete fairness that everyone - including the Mods who want to police the speech on here - refrain from making comments such as "I believe..." or "I think...."  To do so may invite someone to make the claim that another is exercising "religious speech".  As I said before, EVERYONE has a religion and a god.  Even the Atheists.  And Evolution would therefore come under the heading of "religion" too.bcause they ge

Or we can just do like Greg said and act like adults.  If someone posts something you don't like, you can either move on to the next post or make your own views known but do it in such a way as to not flame another.

And btw, according to those two definitions, CGG was not shoving her "religion" down anyone's throat but rather simply stating a personal opinion about the way she was feeling at that time.

God Bless,
