I am delighted that you have become able to pick your new babies. I think that first batch of chicks must be the best. It's also a good thing that you will be able to get them settled with water and food as quickly as you can.

I think pet owners should consider the time and expense it takes to maintain happy, well socialized, healthy animals before they bring them into their home and also consider the effect a bored, unsupervised, untrained animal will have on surrounding neighbors.

Your post didn't sound as if you cared about the dogs, just your chickens. I'm not here to argue chickens vs dogs. You did say that the dogs have a doggy door so they have access to shelter (I presume there is water for them inside).

I do have one rule I live by. I keep my pets on my property and all other people should do the same. Maybe I'll feel different in the future when my hens are in their space outside, but I don't think so.  I learned a very, very hard lesson years ago with a favorite dog of mine. I was one that believed that a dog should not be chained up and should be able to roam. He was killed on the street where I lived at the time. I don't like other's pets/livestock coming onto my property (although I understand sometimes the animals have other ideas). As for training, etc that really is up to the owner. BTW, how do you train a chicken?

Mopsy has died. She was my lap chicken. She was fine in the afternoon,  looked a little bit under the weather by evening, and was gone this morning. What can happen so fast? 

I won't be selling any Brabanter eggs this spring. I need to incubate the ones I've been saving.

I respectfully disagree. To me it sounded like her first concern was her chickens (understandable) and her second was that these dogs may not be getting the attention and education they crave/need.

I do not agree with a dog that is tied up most of it's life. That being said I am TOTALLY against dogs running loose on other peoples property. I train my dogs to stay in their area. And expect the same of others.

One problem I have had a couple times with Quincy. If I am not around and DW goes across the road and gets out of his sight he will go find her. I really can't get after him since he is actually doing a portion of his job, keeping track of her. I just keep telling DW that if she is going across the road Quincy is put in the house or tied in the front yard until she gets back. Funny thing is he will set and howl until he sees her.

So sorry to hear about Mopsy. She may not have been feeling good for some time. See birds tend to hide illness very well and many times by the time we see symptoms it is too late.
 

I so wish I could go to the show this weekend, I dont think I can make it even for a few hours with all that is going on around this place. So Im thinking a get together around her for all of us maybe. We tried to do it last year but not sure what happend.

I sure hope everyone has a great time, I really enjoyed it last year.
