I went to look into the green house and it is FULL of No SEE Ums  having a PARTY !!!!!!!!!!!!

so i turned on the big fan............

So, I reported yesterday that I had eggs that were pipping right??

this has been the worst hatch since I have been hatching!!!   They all pipped a day early, only two made it out completely by themselves, one died in the egg after pipping and one is still only 3/4ths out!!  I don't know if it's cause I have always had bigger numbers of eggs or what?? I am just so frusterated with the hygometer temp thing!!  I think I find one acurate and it's not!!!  Anyway, OH yea I need to know if any of you know what kind of bantams these are!!!!???

They teenie tiny and I was looking for self blue something bantam, to do mate testing later with my B AM's  ??

also, NO ONE is laying. I took the heat lamp out, maybe I will put back in a llittle light to see if that will kick start them. I have 6 in the layer pen. There will be more added this summer...but the one who was laying went broody - so I put serama eggs under her.

 

Shell-less eggs can be caused by a multitude of reasons, but what has happened is the egg (membrane attached) passes too quickly through the hen's Uterus, also called "the shell gland" where the egg spends 80% of it's time as the egg shell is formed around the membrane, encasing it.

I have heard a frightened hen can lay a shell-less egg, hens disturbed by stress or fear.

It does not necessarily mean the hen has not enough nutirents or oyster shell.

Usually it happens more often in certain "high strung" breeds.

My Ameraucanas lay a "blob" egg as I call them, every once in a while.

If your birds are not laying it is due to light.

They must have 16 hours of light to activate the egg factory   I do not think the heat lamp will help...try a nice bright Florescent or at minimum a 60 watt incandescent bulb on a timer srat at 5 AM & off at 5 PM to start with..then they have a bit of day light left in which to seek a roost before it gets dark or they will be trapped on the coop floor if the light suddenly goes out & it is too dark for them to roost.

 

Thank you, I was thinking they needed more light. I will put one in either tomorrow night or Saturday. I was hoping that with the days being longer (if only just a tiny bit) would work...but not yet I guess. And the days have been very dark and rainy too.

Julie I totally understand your frustration. BUT here is another idea to think about. Can you get in touch with the farmers who have the wheat and corn? If so inform them of what is going on and they just may take care of the problem for you. See those goats are taking food off their tables (so to speak). And that may reduce the heat on you.

 I know CR, I have been   fingers that the Wheat guy would come along to check on something and see them, I've been taking pictures too and have the date and time recorded!!  I just don't know who they are!!  See what this guy doesn't know, is I grew up around here, I KNOW a lot of people, and word has gotten back to me about the fact that no vet will come take care of his cows cause he doesn't pay them, but here's something else, he doesn't work, he's scraggly and older (15 or 20 more then us)  but, he bought himself and relatively new Ford crew cab one ton diesel?? and his live in girlie a new car??  But, he can't feed his animals or get them spayed or neutered!!

we call that the "farmer mentality"

because animals are expendable you can always get more!!! 

He finally move one dog cause I was so angry that it barked all the time and he would just stand there and not say anything I started screaming for it to shut up and they heard me!!  I don't care!!  I used to teach my dogs to only bark when it was needed, it's really not that hard!  It's the fact he doesn't give a ****!!!  ya know???  I try to respect people's quiet and space, I guess I expect too much for them to do the same for me!! 

I certainly don't think he's selling drugs, but he has enough to go around and buy up all these "show" tractors and keep them strewn all over his yard as well!!  It's a pig sty!
