I put my 8 little ones out in the garage-coop a few days ago. They were just getting too big to be in the brooder that I had in the living room. I'm sure that 7 are pullets and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte I'm 99% sure is a roo. Now that they are all out with the mature hens and the 3 mallards, the roo is starting to learn some manners.
I know that I have violated the normal protocols of introducing new chicks to an established flock. On the other hand, I've been checking on them closely and I've found no sign of stress or chill.
Today, 5 of the 8 chicks came out in the run to join the big girls. Even the mallard ducklings were out to enjoy the evening sun. Ducklings and chicks are from a Feb. 27th hatch. So about 5 weeks old now and doing well on their own. I do still have a red heat lamp and a white 75w bulb in the coop in case they want to get warm.
Just something to think about most diseases or virus incubate 7 - 14 days, so when ever I have something new, they usually stay in quarantine for at least 14 days sometimes three weeks!! Just to be on the safe side, but, everyone needs to do what they need to do, so I'm sure you are doing the right thing, just thought I would pass that along, ( it's a vet tech thing) LOL!
