The girls are already in their coop though since it has electricity and a brooder lamp inside.

Lay it flay on the ground around the run. That will prevent animals from digging their way in.

Providing a heated area for the wet babes to come in to, may be best in this weather.

But by 10 weeks shouldn't they be plenty able to keep warm without the lamp? Or perhaps I could keep using the brooder lamp but only at night...IDK, I'm new hmm.png

I put mine out at six weeks. So far, so good.

What about pests like rats? I'm worried about them getting through the door opening. I was hoping to leave food out (in the covered part of the run) all the time, but can't do that if there's a chance that rats could get in. I will probably set up the chain link kennel this week just so they can be outside unattended a little bit each day, but before long I'll need to ensure that it's very secure. I'll be putting chicken wire over the top of it and then corrugated roofing over that. Then, hardware cloth around the bottom 2-3'; I was thinking if I secured it to the inside of the run and then pulled it under, to the outside, to lay flat on the ground for another 1'? How does that sound? I could even put large cobbles around that for "decoration" and added security. The only problem is the door. There is a gap between the chain link door and the frame.

I wouldn't leave food out at night. It attracts rats and raccoon, and possum, and Lord knows what else. Chickens don't eat at night, so they don't need it.

I layed chicken wire around and up the side about 4-5 inches of my run to keep bigger animals from digging. It's now covered in grasses and weeds so you can't see it but if something starts to dig it will run into it. I also have electric wires running around my coop. Most predators lead with their nose and will come into contact with the wire closest to the ground(5-6" up) and will be zapped!

It is more expensive to do this and if you have little kids you may want to skip it to avoid shocking them. They may not appreciate the fact that you are just trying to keep your flock safe. I live out in an urban area and coyotes and bobcats come through here, so I have taken more precautions.
