Just wanted to say from Tacoma!

We just got our first set of chicks on Friday, so it's been an exciting weekend. My parents have had backyard chickens for about 10 years so I'm familiar, but this will be the first time for our family. We've got them living in the kitchen in a brooder box, behind a baby gate since I have a toddler and a dog who are fascinated. I also have 2 school age girls who are quite in love with them.  I built a bigger composite bin yesterday to handle the poo, so I think we're all set!

We have a Silver laced Wynadotte, Red laced Wynadotte, Cuckoo Maran and an Ameracuana.

       To you and any / all of the other new peeps. I think you will find that this VERY FAST moving thread contains a lot of helpful info. You will also find a great group of people here who tend to be very caring and willing to help others. 

I am in the process of moving my friends 8 adult hens in with my flock of about 16 adults.  She is moving to BC and can't take her girls. So she is giving me a killer deal on her coop, fencing, charger and other equipment.  I just have to move it all.  I need 8 more hens like a hole in the head but it is a package deal and she is thrilled that her hens are going to a great home.  So I brought 3 of the girls over yesterday and plan to bring the others in in groups of 2 and 3 rather than dump 8 in at the same time.  I put them in last night and cracked up when I saw that they had sorted themselves by color, yellow with yellow, black with black.  I don't have any other speckled chickens so she was hanging out with my blue copper Marans of which I only have 1.  This morning there is some hen fighting going on but my rooster is over the moon that he attracted 3 lovely girls to the flock.  Bringing the second batch in on Thursday.

So with my 16 chickens, 8 new hens, 8-3 month olds and 6-5 day old chicks that brings me to 38 chickens?  Yikes.  I remember thinking 8 was a good size flock.  Chicken math strikes again.

Well they made it through the night... Fingers crossed they all go well today.
