Also -- chicken wire will keep chickens in, but will not keep most any predators out.  Dogs, racoons, opossums, fox, bobcats and monkeys will all get through that wire.  (What do you mean monkeys are not a threat?  Have you see a very hungry monkey?)

I've finished my work on 4312's coop.  Wait until she posts pictures - that thing is HUGE.

Monkeys are the only critter that could get into my coops, being they have thumbs & know how to use them...so far, I think we are safe here !   lau.gif

Thank you!!!

Jessica... so glad to hear your little guy is healing.  I'm sure that was a pretty traumatic event.

Last year I was raising a bunch of chicks on  locally grown feed, and I noticed that the giant cochin chick, the largest of my breeds (, was not flourishing like the rest. She was wobbly and her feathers looked disheveled. I read that is could be a vitamin defficiency (B or D, I forget...). I gave her  some nutridrench and switched the feed to purina chick start. Within a few hours she had noticeably improved and by 2 days she no longer had any wobbles (she could scarcely stand the day I switched the feed). She has grown into a nice hen, and never had any more problems.

Usually I prefer to support small-scale growers/producers, but I now think that at least when they are chicks, they need food that is regularly tested for nutrient content. She is the only of my chicks (and I have had over 50) that has ever had a problem with feed.

Q. Why did the chicken cross the road.
A. To show the opossum and armadillo it could be done.

She is getting the Medicated Purina Start and Grow.  That's the same food, right?  I have a packet of of Sav-a-Chick.  Is that the same as "nutridrench"?  Will it help.  She's pretty little still.

Someone posted on my help thread (http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/667767/help-please-sick-chick-or-injured-chick-w-pictures/10#post_9014709)  to build a sling.  I'll try it and see what I can do.

Here's a pic of me holding her as we tried to figure out what her crop felt like and if her leg was warm.  I'm extremely allergic to the chicks - so I had to wear my respirator.  No laughing!  lau.gif  At least the picture will help you get an idea of how big she is.

I'm wondering if she got hurt somehow while we were gone for 2 days moving my mom and started eating wood chips instead.

I think it is pretty similar stuff. She is a pretty bird, and actually looks much better than my chick did. Mine was very small (I had bantam cochins that were hatched the same week, and she was not bigger than they were!) Her feathers were growing in real sparse. She took off like crazy when I switched her diet, but she still was significantly smaller than another Giant Cochin chick that CL brought me a week later, and that chick was a few weeks younger! Now that once sickly chick is larger.

Good luck with her; I wish I could help more, but I have not had to deal with sick chicks or hens other than the one so I am not very knowledgeable.

How much is too much in regards to treats? My girls are almost outside all day now, unless it is raining and then they have to stay in the coop. I say that so you know they eat grass and bugs all day long. Today is rainy so I brought them some celery and greens earlier, and now I have another bowl of chopped celery, cucumber, sunflower seeds, and flaxseed. Should I just do one bowl a day? They're medium size cereal bowls full to the brim. Just don't want them to suffer being cooped up, but I also want them to eat enough real feed to promote good healthy growth. When they can go outside, we just do occasional mealworms and they eat grass all day.

Remove the easy water, tap the nipples to get a drip of water on the nipple. One bird will need to see the water drop on the nipple and see it drop. You do not want to drip to much water to cause a pool under the bucket. All you need is one bird to drink from the nipple the rest will follow. Chicks always catch on quicker then grown birds.

HTH

We added a nipple system last Thursday morning to our indoor brooder.  We knew we were going to be gone for a couple of days and our babysitter probably would not take care of our 5-week-old chicks.  We installed an adult-sized hanging feeder in the indoor brooder and added a bucket to the top with a hose and PVC pipe 2-nipple system.  We sat out there and played with the nipples until we caught the interest of the birds and saw each one use it a little bit.  But, we made the mistake of putting a small bowl of water in the coop.  We watched them all day on Thursday and part of the day on Friday but they kept drinking out of the bowl.  Before we left Saturday morning, we removed the bowl, showed them the nipple system again, and hoped for the best.  We figured the chicks might stop drinking if the bowl was still in there.  It worked well.  We came home to 3 chickens who appear to be OK.  The water level in the bucket has gone down, and there's not too much water on the coop floor, so we can only assume they have been drinking.  The nipple system is going to be so much easier to take care of!  No more daily cleaning of a water container.  wee.gif

Moral of the story... remove any other water containers if you are trying to teach your chicks to use a nipple system.  wink.png

That is why I keep the plastic screw on gallon style waterer for medicine, I know if I put in with them the birds will flock to it to drink.

Ahhhh! Very smart indeed!
