Well, we just had a close call.  I was catching up on posts and chatting with DH about our trip.  The girls were free-ranging.  I heard them start clucking - told DH to come with me because that wasn't a good sound.  We ran out.  That large (but skinny) stray male cat was on my patio about 5 feet away from the panicked pullets.  barnie.gif

I want that cat gone!!!  It has been terrorizing the animals in the neighborhood for close to a year.  I hate it when people get an animal and just abandon it.  It belonged to some people who rented a house down the road - and when they moved, they didn't want it, so they left it behind.  The thing is getting so skinny, but I'm not about to feed it because I don't want it to have a reason to come into my yard.  The girls attract it enough, as it is.

You should catch it in a live trap should be easy if its that hungry than take it to the pound or paws or some place like that. Poor cat.

I checked her over and didn't see any wounds to her head, she did have a few shavings in her mouth when I picked her up, but I thought it was from struggling on her back. Now I am wondering if she was eating the the shavings and choked. Of course she was the only one I named, and always snuggled up in my hand when I picked her up. The roosts in the brooder are 6" up would that be high enough for them to get hurt if they fell? The top of the brooder is a wooden frame on hinges with hardware cloth over it so the dogs and cat can't get in.

What kind of shavings? They need to be white pine not cedar. What breed of chicken could it have been a silkie and one of the other one's pecked on her head?

We tried to do that.  I called around... the closest place I could find that would take him was up in Lynnwood.  Not wasting the gas on a cat that has it out for my chickens.  That would be more than an hour drive each way.

I've thought about calling animal control... but I'm not sure what they would do with him.  I'd prefer he'd go to a no kill facility.  The thing is still alive - so I'm guessing he's either hunting or stealing food from somewhere.  Maybe (hopefully) he's cleaning out a certain rat nest in a neighbor's back yard.  fl.gif

Went out to the patio at 6:30 this morning to have coffee and watch chickens.  It was in my back yard again!  barnie.gif

I hate keeping my birds penned up. I like my animals to have freedom. Oh, well, until we do something about that coyote, it will just have to be that way!

On a positive note, my DH left the window open last night - on the side of the house facing the pen. I woke up early because it sounded like the roosters were on my patio! I went outside to watch them for a few minutes, and the peachick came out of the bushes! woohoo! now if I could only catch the bugger. Even with clipped wings, the little guy can run! And the bushes are a thicket. I'll get him back in the pen someday! At least I know he's safe.woot.gif

They are white pine, but the last bag I got was a different brand from a different store, and the shavings were much smaller. I am going to completely clean out those shavings and go back to the white pine from the Grange in Issaquah, they are bigger shavings, in a bigger bag, $3 less, and not as dusty. She was a LF Cochin and was housed with LF Cochins and Brahmas. It still could be trauma too, the roosters in the brooder are trying to assert their dominance over anyone they think is standing up to them. I have seen a couple of kicking contest already...Sheesh!

So as sweet as they can be, I still have moments of thinking of them as nasty little dogs.

I can tell you why they're the nasty little pups! rant.gif I'd be thrilled to tell you! There are still scars... lol.png

Yo! Just popping in for a minute to catch up. Going to my sister's for the day; our mom is in town (dad couldn't come this time, bummer) so we will basically be busy for the next week every day with me, sister, 8 kids between us, and grandma! Just went out to pick a ton of grass for the chickens to eat and as fast as I could pick it, they were eating it! eesh. I know they want out, but DH can't stand the poo anymore. We are only letting them out from about 7pm until they put themselves to bed at 8:30. I talked to DH about the winter though, and we came to the agreement that since, once the rains come, we don't ever use the backyard, they can free range all fall/winter/half of spring, and only during the nice months will we confine them most of the days. Sounds like a good solution to me! OK, off to get dressed and pack some lunch stuff before DH gets home to take us to my sister's. Bye!
