Who knows, maybe you will inspire them to have their own chickens, then you can watch each others' birds during trips, and know that they won't complain about your flock! smile.png

I will keep this in mind hopefully. You were are very helpful with the meaties. Not to mention how much we enjoyed you company. It maybe a good idea to remind me next spring. I am hoping to start earlier next year.

Sounds like a plan! You can always call on me to help. smile.png

I have straw, but didn't put it in for fear Drama would eat it and get an impacted crop again.

I've not tried wood shavings in my nesting boxes.  I've had great luck with straw (nobody eats it) and not so much luck with shredded paper.

Right now I'm using CareFresh bedding, but only because I had bags left over from my small animals. It gets kicked out of the nest boxes a lot, and occasionally sticks to eggs.

My next nest box liner is going to be what SadieSue, Ogress and some others have discovered. It's an excelsior pad and it's easy to keep clean and change out when necessary: http://www.eggcartons.com/Home-Page/Nest-Pads-and-Bedding

Renee, there are rescue groups that will trap cats and take them away. I don't have info on any, but that might be an option. Then they use their gas, the cat is gone and your girls are safe. Win win! smile.png

My big hatchery Brahma has decided she wants to be broody. This is day two of her takeover of one of the favorite nest boxes. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to argue with her, she bites hard. So I'll have to decide what eggs to to slip into the nest box when she leaves for food. She is the biggest chicken I have right now, until the 6 week old brahmas grow up.

If you hear of any, let me know.  I called the only one in Auburn that I could find, and the guy said they were not able to take any right now - yet he continues to e-mail me to ask the status of the cat.  He gave me the names of some places, I called them all - no one could take a cat right now.  There are too many strays.

I'm supposed to be packing.  But I can't stop crying.  A little boy in my Webelos Den got hit by a car.  So, I'm here trying to think happy chicken thoughts.  Suddenly chickens don't matter, either.  I'm just sick.  I'm hoping we'll hear good news before we leave for vacation.

So.... who has cute baby chick pictures to show????  I need happy pics to make me smile.

I think I'll go snuggle my Drama.

Just Bugged,  I get such a kick everytime you mention the "nasty puppies,"  I know what you mean.  Yorkies(and other toy breeds) tend to be long lived and remain puppies till the end, and don't care for housetraining. .  What fun for you and, for us, hearing about their antics.Tell us more...
