I used to live not far from there, a few miles.

It is spectacular country, but the winters can be very, very hard !

I'd suggest keeping an open mind.

Thank you, I will try! I know very little about where the best places to get chickens are, and I apologize if I am insulting anyone's birds. I am a lot more familiar with reptiles, and there are a million good reasons not to buy those from pet stores or bulk dealers. And I have no idea how to tell what an adult hen will look like based on its appearance as a chick. Is there any way to tell?

Jennifer

You're not insulting anyone, you are trying to get information to make your decision. smile.png

Once again, you have to do what works for you. As others have said, it depends on what you want from your flock.

By the way, I find that reptile and bird husbandry are very similar. I used to have green iguanas, and had friends with snakes, water dragons, chameleons, geckos, uromastyx, etc.

There is a way to do this with a 5 gallon bucket and a section of PVC pipe over the top, the rats crawl up the pipe to get in the bucket but the pipe can spin, so they are thus dumped in.

RainWolf has made such a trap & it works well.

Look on line to see plans, it is easy to build.

Maybe RW can post pics ?

OK nobody get all bent here. But the rally monkey is my attempt to get the WA thread BACK to the fun friendly way it was not long ago. I think when we make that happen many folks will see what an awesome group of elderly old codgers we are and hopefully people will also feel more comfortable to join into the group as it is. old.gif

I'm sorry Renee that you have had to deal with judgmental people...your sons are very lucky to have you as a mother and a supportive family. I don't know that the other kids are necessarily trying to be mean, they may just be curious, and it might be an opportunity to educate them so they grow up to be more tolerant and understanding. (I realize it's stressful for you and I'm not the one whose kids are in the situation, so you can tell me to go take a running jump) Every summer I work as a camp counselor for a week and we usually have a couple campers who are on the autism spectrum. We'd have other kids want to know why certain others always had outbursts, or what was wrong with them, etc. They were genuinely curious and if we explained what was going on, they were surprisingly patient and understanding, even protective, of their autistic peers.
