BTW... I don't put the grit or oyster shell in any feeders.  I just sprinkle both of them on the floor of the run.  I used to put them in bowls, and they'd knock them over.  Having the grit and oyster shell on the floor gives them something to scratch through, too.  I don't use hay or anything like that in my run.  It's bad enough that my allergies react to the pine chips - I'm not about to take a chance with hay on the ground.

Thank you! We brought her home around noon today. She is very unsteady on her feet, but only needs one person keeping an hand on her harness to keep her upright. We stopped at a pet store to buy the harness and I got some of her favorite treats, which she ate immediately in the van. (She had not touched food at all for almost 2 days.) She has been on her bed most of the time, snoozing away. (Oh, and I had it wrong. She just turned 14 yesterday!) I'm a softie, so I've been giving her treats all day and bringing her water in a bowl. She hasn't touched her regular food, but she took her pills like usual. So long as she's eating and getting her meds, I'm happy. I'll be calling her regular vet in the morning to take her in for blood work.

I'm very thankful we can afford critical care for our pets, and that there is an animal ER like 2 miles from our house. It's very costly, but if we didn't take them in, we would have lost her around 4-5 years ago, when she had her first emergency. That was hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. I do have to say, when your dog starts bleeding from its rear end, you get to see the doctor real fast! A couple years later, she had seizures. We've also taken in another greyhound for a stroke and probably something else, and a third one had a leg amputated for bone cancer there. Plus, our diabetic 17 year old cat sees an Internist there.

Why am I getting into another kind of animal that has health problems??? And I kind of doubt that I'd be able to eat a chicken that was a pet, even if it had to be put down. I could easily eat a meat chicken raised for that purpose and named "Tenders" or something like that, but not a pet.

I guess that would be hard to identify a squished blob, haha! Not many would be able to collect a live one! Good luck and I hope for good news!

Well, bless your heart!! Sounds like you've had enough vet. problems to last a lifetime! Hope your kitty handles the insulin shots without much trouble. At the vet clinic I worked at we had a few that would board and many were a bit grumpy! Can't blame them, though, being away from home.

Just a Reminder.....

1 Lemon Cuckoo Orpington Rooster - free to BYC member if used for flock - Size Large!

3 Large Fowl Black Ameraucana's -$10 each unsexed -Raised by a broody so needs a little handling work but still friendly little bugs - Poseidon's Babies

1 Bantam mutt pullet - $10 - 4-5 months old little white bug with sort of splash coloring.... (looks white until you really look then you notice some colors)
Parentage is a Bantam White (with hidden blue gene) Leghorn/Cochin Rooster with a Bantam Andalusian Blue Hen. Hen lays med eggs so egg size hopefully will be good for a little bantam.

PM me if interested.
Need to reduce flock back to my breeders and layers before I get in neighbor trouble big_smile.png

The cost of water where I live is ridiculous. If I was to water the lawn and garden everyday, my water bill would be over $60/month. So when the dry comes, my shrubs get some water, the grass (otherwise known as weeds) turns brown and goes dormant which inturn mean I don't cut grass which saves me buku $$.

With that said, I am leaning towards a garden next year, but I will have to see when the time comes.

Yup .. own well.  There are some very interesting techniques for folks who need to conserve water.  One that I want to experiment with is this -- http://permaculturenews.org/2010/08/03/the-art-and-science-of-making-a-hugelkultur-bed-transforming-woody-debris-into-a-garden-resource/

Not the best link, but it might perk your interest.

Mikey -- also check out this wonderful book that  itsren told me about:

Thanks Velvetfog, good info I will read and get informed.

Blech!! Sorry it was in the house!! I am finding them all over the yard, but haven't seen one in the house in a while. There was one with a web on the chain link fence and I held up Lucy to eat it. She did a great job! Tore the sucker apart and I was so thankful it was gone! I believe we've had less spiders in the house this year because the chickens like to stick close to the house and walk the perimeter eating whatever bugs they find! clap.gif

absolutely. my girls make a bee-line for the side of the house and hunt and scratch. My weed eating chores for this area is ZILCH, 0, nada. The best thing though is the reduction of spiders in my house. The doggy door made for easy access to the creepies and crawlies. The reduction has been at least 90% and no I'm not spinning a tall tale.

Well I don't claim to be part of the true night crew but I am usually on here until about 11:00pm and back about 3:00-4:00 am.  It sucks but hey what else am I gonna do at that time??

If I remember correctly, I am the first ya.gifchief of the night crew.  I do admit that I have been slacking off the past few months though. hide.gif hide.gifhide.gif

Tonight I have a very good excuse for not being around until late. barnie.gif About 7:30pm tonight my parents showed up without any prior notice. I haven't seen or talked to them for several years now. duc.gif I will admit that I have been very happy with the way things were. But darn it; I am an extremely hospitable person...... smack.gifth.gif So they are spending the night, and I get to sleep on the sofa. hit.gif I'm going to have to think about this situation for a bit. Oh well it's not like I have had to discuss anything important so far. th.gif

But I am very certain that the head chief of the night crew should really belong to Rainwolf. I think that she spends more of the night awake than I do. CR is very good at taking over after I finally head for bed between 2 and 3 in the morning. lol

For all you folks that are trying to get rid of the spiders, I hope you leave mine alone. lau.gif I love my spiders. I know that they are excellent at eating other bus that are much worse. I rarely ever kill the spiders around here. There are times when I have to suggest that they leave certain places though. I will admit to not being very happy last year, when I had on of the big fall spiders make a face height web just out my sliding patio door. She got moved right after the picture was taken. gig.gif
