There is an excellent SAFE weed killer that works on Canada Thistle, don't know if it would work on cactus but might be worth a try. It's called vinegar. Regular household stuff or there are places that sell stronger concentrations to use as weed killer. If you use it, try to just spot spray or you might kill everything.

I live in the high desert and my horse corral was full of Cholla. Cholla is a jumping cactus meaning if you touch it the whole cactus arm comes off and adheres to your body.

I cleared this myself using a Mule digger. Cacuts while hard to handle doesnt have a substantial root system. Once you get the mule under the base all you have to do is lift. These cactuses are huge probably about the size of about four trash cans together. A mule is like a straight shovel but the head is very heavy and thick cast iron like a pick and it has a wooden handle. It took me three days to clear a half acre. And I could only work about three hours at a time. I have arthritis and have to sit and rest to recover before working more.

Then use a pitch fork to remove the cactus. Either lay on a tarp and drag away. If you lay it in piles it will Dessicate enough so that you can either incinerate it or you could put it in the dumpster.

I got 99 percent of the stuff. I found the rest plastered on my Percherons ample behind. She never complained when I removed it. what a goofball

Thank you all for the advice..... If I decide on the property I will have information now on how to rid the pasture of these prickly pests. I do like cactus, just not around my livestock. I would NOT want to deburr a Emu of cactus spines........ shudder......
