Hi,
I am thinking about getting some chickens and the first thing I thought was call the city and see if it is ok, the lady who answered seemed a bit confused and said I dont know and then said NO. I finally found the city ordinances and it says that I can well it says that fowl and bees have to be keep 300 feet from any dwelling, street etc. It also said that fowl can not be at large in a public place or street or premises of another without their consent. Now to me that seems like they are legal in my city. I wrote an email to the city clerk to ask for verification on what the ordinances are. Do you think she either just did not want to deal with it or that she just discourages things like that in the city. I live in Warren MI and I have never seen a neighbor have a coop or any chickens but if I can I want to have them but I do not want to go through getting them and getting attached and having the expense of a coop just for them to say that they are not allowed. Has anyone had this problem that you can shed some light on it for me.

Thanks a bunch

I'd say if you would like to get some chickens, look further into the ordinance. There may have been a misunderstanding between you and the person you previously spoke to, especially if she seemed confused. Just be sure that your property and set up fit accordingly with the ordiance. There's nothing worse than getting your chickens and then finding out you're keeping them illegally. You could always request a meeting with the selectmen in your town to have the ordinance re-evaluated or to get a permit of sorts to keep chickens. Hopefully the city clerk can answer your questions.

How much space do you have? That 300 feet - 100 yards, the length of a football field - could kill any chance you have if you live in town in a neighborhood where houses, streets, etc. are close in to each other. By all means first check, and be sure of, your city ordinances.

Hi,
thanks for the reply the ordinance says " It shall be unlawful for any person who keep any animal or fowl or bees within three hundred feet feet of any dwelling, store, alley or public place except such animals as are commonly kept or housed as household pets"
So I am confused. I have been reading here about the MRTFA and I do not know if I would fall under this or not and since the ordinance says about the feet from the dwelling. They would be in a coop
When I called she said NO not that there was any certain distance to where I could keep them

Hello....I also live in Warren,MI.
I'm thinking of getting 2 chickens. Did you figure out the legality of it? The ordinance is not clear on the city website...
