Pasty butt help - best way to remove?

I had one with pasty butt that I got at TSC yesterday. I put her bum under warm water and gently crumbled the poop until it was all clear. I put electrolytes in the water, but have heard that apple cider vinegar helps too.

My silkies have poop stuck to their little butts too! But I have tried so many things and it comes back. They cry so much when I try to get it off, I feel really bad. I prefer for them to be self-sufficient in that aspect, but I worry as well that I might lose them if they cannot relieve themselves.

Just make sure its warm in the room and that the water is warm, but not too hot. Hold the chick so that the water runs over its hiney with one hand and use your other hand as the poo 'softens' to help it rinse away. Don't pull on the stuck poo! It will soften and come off with just a little help from you. When I've had to do this, they actually like it; they sort of relax with the warm water running on them. Wrap your chick loosely in a towel and make sure it stays warm until it's completely dry.

Thanks so much everyone!

I got it off... he's all dried and back in the box with the others. Now I'm hoping he'll be good to go and we won't have to do that anymore!

Oh and yes, I put a bit of sugar in their water. The white Polish has been eating/drinking very well on his own so I'm just going to keep checking his bottom and keeping a close eye on him for a while.

Believe it or not, Pasty Butt is a symptom of constipation. The white stuff is urine and that is mostly what gets by the blockage. The cure is molasses in their drinking water. Molasses is a natural laxative for fowl. Mix it like weak tea and give it to them for 2 days. Naturally you should clean their little butts with a warm damp cloth before you start the treatment. Failure to cure this condition could result in a painful death for your chicken. This treatment is for adult birds as well as chicks. Also, it doesn`t have to be brought on by stress during shipping. I have had hen hatched chicks with pasty butt, adults too.............Pop

The Polish seem to be the worst about pasty butt. I hold the chick in my hand and run warm water over its rear and gently wipe with a paper towel. It doesn't come off very easily but the chick shouldn't squirm too bad if using water that's not too cold or too hot.
