Will black snakes harm my chickens and chicks?

Hi Roxanne567,

Just want to let you know this thread is from 2011, so might not get a response. I am sorry about your loss and the problem you are having this problem with that snake. Are your broody hens kept in a predator proof pen covered with hardware fabric? This might help keep snakes away from them :).

I had a problem with one snake for awhile, until I snake proofed the coop. I would go to collect eggs and you could see by body distention that it had eaten several besides the one in its mouth. If its mouth is full (with that egg), you can simply pick it up and dispose of it however you want. Personally, I think prevention is the best cure. I have never lost an actual hen to a snake--if I found my hen wrapped by a snake, the snake would die. Period. Just remember that many snakes are useful around the homestead but, if there is a useful snake, there is probably also one you'd rather not have. I have found snakeskins in my attic, so I know they get up there somehow and I don't like that thought at all!
