Ruddy Shelduck.

Yes pretty easy. If they have plenty of room you can sometimes keep them with other waterfowl. You can halfway bury a small drum or barrel for them to nest in. They generally lay in their second year. They can get grumpy during breeding season thats why some people keep them in their own pen. My friend has 2 breeding pairs right now with other waterfowl in about a 30x100 ft pen with no problems. One box they use is at ground level but totally covered with dirt like an igloo.

so would they kill mandarins? I have a 30x20 aviary with 5 pheasants and 2 mandarins so could i put ruddies with them?
or in a different pen? and i heard the common shelducks were less aggresive? would they be able to go in there?

Very hard to say. I guess you could try it but I would definitely watch them a long while. Commons are a tinge better but during breeding all bets are off. One of my friends had a pair that there isnt no way to put with any other ducks without them killin them and my other friends are the most mellow (even during breeding) i've ever seen.

Yes, I would trust them during breeding season, ruddy shels can be one of the more aggressive of the species, european and radjah on average are the most docile, but still no promises with them. If in community pens, they are best kept with large species or even geese. Northern pintail always seemed to fair o kay with them, but they would still run them from time to time. Honestly, 95% of all ducks are fine together, but the shelducks are one of the exceptions and are best kept 1 pair to 1 pen

Ok will do! thanks! And also whats a fair cost for pair of ruddies and/or commons?

both can be found fairly easy for $75- $100 a pair. Commons are usually a touch on the higher end than ruddies. They are both the most common and productive of the species.
To me they both are very attractive, but the european has a little more going in color pattern....if you can afford them the radjah are very pretty as are a few of the others.

Radjah are about $250 everywhere
paradise same ball park, $200- $250
australian $500
cape $125

For some reason, these are one of those groups of ducks that really dont vary at all in price. Pretty much all breeders sell them for those prices, unlike the more common stuff like wood ducks and mandarins that can vary by 250% in price
