I had a broody hide a nest from me and became broody on 8 eggs in december. 7 of those 8 hatched and did well they had no heater

Lot of us NH people on this thread! I only clicked on it because of the title. I had never heard of a "mother hen hatching", and was hoping to see pics!

Ok I have chickens a long time but always wondered If you leave eggs in the nest...When do the young hens know enough to sit on them? Does there have to be a certain number of eggs in the nest? I plan on leaving some in the nest late may..im in Maine and the weather changes here like every hour.

MY hen is always acting like a mother hen. she needs eggs in the nesting box always, or she flips out, and starts a squawking party!!

I'm in CT and just had a broody hatch out a chick last night! If there was another one I might bring them both inside, but for now there's only one and the hen seems to be doing a good job keeping the baby warm (I tried to look under mama hen this morning and heard the chick peeping). I have a flat panel heater in the coop that I kept on continuously overnight (usually I have it on a thermostat so it turns on at 35 and off at 45), so it was a little warmer than usual in the coop, but still cold with temperatures outside in the teens. I have a heat lamp ready to go if the mama hen leaves the baby or anything, or even if we bring them in when the chick starts to come out for food and water. This is my first time with a broody, so I'm super nervous!! It was a relief to hear about some of you having chicks born in cold weather and everything being okay
