Dog attack saves Jerry the roosters life

Jerry is a 2month old BA rooster

The other morning we went outside for morning chores and saw some of the BA's out of their pen.  When to my horror I see my newest mini eskie play / attack one of the chicks.  She has not killed it and is standing over the injured chick barking trying to get it to run so she can chase it again.   Her favorite game.   I rush over to the chick and it is in rough shape.  Most of its tail feathers have been pulled out and blood dripping from its beak.  It's rattling with each breath.  I discuss with DH about just putting it down.  He says well why don't you try to save it.  So we gathered up the other 5 unharmed chicks running free.  I took the injured fella into the house to doctor its wounds and look it over a bit closer.  It had two teeth puntures in its rear end and two more on the its breast.  It's wing has also been torn up.

After I finished caring for its wounds we put it in a rubbermaid tub with straw water and medicated feed.  It slept for 5hrs and  then ate and drank a lil.  We named him Jerry at that point and decided that he was no longer to be butched with the other BA roosters.  So for the last two days he has been improving and getting much stronger and become so tame and sweet.  Not that he was ever wild but just not used to being handled as we don't make it a habbit of playing with our food.

So Angel the mini eskie still has a lot to learn when it comes to living on a farm but she was not punished for being a dog.  I scolded her in the act and that was that.  However she did in the long run save Jerry's life.

Jerry is 2 months old and Angel is our 2yr old addopted mini eskie.  We were giving her a secound chance from the humane society after her previous owner surrendered her for burning her feet to keep her from chasing cows.  She still limps when it is cold out.  She just needs to learn without being abused.  She was playing with the chick not trying to kill it if she wanted to kill it it would have been dead.

There are so many things I could say about the situation.  Oh so many.  But I'll keep it fairly short.

I am horrified anybody would do that do a dog - the burn the paws bit - and am SO glad you are giving her a home.  I know that many "Dog kills chicken" tales are due to dogs just playing; I am intimately acquainted with a dog who wanted just to play with the running chicken(s).  It wasn't his fault so I wasn't going to get rid of him.

I am also pleased you understand your dog was just being a dog, and isn't a bloodthirsty chicken killer.  And that it was a lapse in your vigilance that allowed the situation to occur.  AND that you know you can train her without fear and pain to change her behavior.  Kudos!

I'm very glad Jerry appears to be improving.  The irony that this event is saving the roo's life is an added perk.

Buncha Outdoor PET chickens, ducks, two Toulouse ganders, and four turkeys. Plus 2 wiener dogs, some bunnies and a rescue cat which owns me. Oh. And a house silkie....

Yes it is truly sad about Angels previous owners abuse but she is a blessing to us.  I do not allow the chickens to run free and the fact that they got out is not her fault it was human error.  Not sure which one of us but we hope we fixed the problem now.

As for Jerry my 11 yr old son will not allow the roo to be eaten now, as he has made a stand for the roo's life by stating that if this roo is killed he will not eat chicken anymore.  And he was not throwing a fit and since he is the one taking care of the roo I respect his feeling on the matter.  He has put time, effort and heart into healing the rooster so Jerry is his to keep.

Sometimes things happen that we don't understand the reason for until much later and I think this might be one of those times. Since Jerry's life has been saved he just might end up saving someone else life. I can't believe what Angels old owners did to her. I have a dog that was abused and it has been a long road to recovery for him and he is till recovering but he is such a loving dog.

cool! and sad that someone would do something like that to a dog.

I have 6 chickens! one dog, she is a Coton De Tulear and the smartest doggie alive! I also have several goldfish aproaching seven years old.

99.999% of girls would die if Justin Bieber appeared at their doorstep and asked for a date. If your that 0.0001% Who's wiping blood from your fist, put this in your siggy.
