What is the differenece between Jumbo Coturnix, Texas A&M, & plain Coturnix??
I want to raise them for Meat and Eggs, any suggestions?

Thanks

Each color has a designated name. Genetics play a huge role as well. The Jumbos mainly refer to brown and white in color (yes, the whites can get big too

As I found out from keeping a mixed colour strain of coturnix, white birds are nearly impossible to sex, and brown and goldens are far easier and it's good to know at week 3 what you've got by sight rather than to vent sex them and end up getting it wrong like me :>

The only difference is....the color in the jumbos.
"Plain" coturnix are just smaller versions of the "Jumbos". Any color.

A coturnix is a coturnin is a coturnix. The only thing different is the size and/or the color.

We hatched a few Jumbo Browns and then purchased some day old Texas A&M whites. They were roughly the same age as far as hatch date goes. The whites were not nearly as intelligent and more aggressive. They did not scratch at all the way the browns did. Size wise they weren't any different though we didn't weigh them. Ended up harvesting all the whites and holding on to the browns for breeding stock. Hopefully that pays off. It seems like the browns had some "instincts" left in them as they seek shelter when you enter the pen and hide their eggs unlike the whites who would drop eggs and just keep walking. These were the first quail we've ever raised so it could all just be a fluke, but still it's what we observed.

I know this is an old post, but your post deffinitely acurate. I raised brown before and decided to go with Texas A&M this time around. The brown coturnix is much friendlier. By the way, the A&M I got from James Marie Farms.

We sell the pharaoh coturnix eggs, as opposed to the jumbo or A&M coturnix. The pharaoh coturnix, if you dress them out, dresses out to about 4oz of meat. The Jumbo or A&M are a bit larger, if you dress them out, they are the equivalent to a Cornish hen.

Is there any difference in the meat or taste of it between the TxA&m's vs Pharaohs?

I've had standard coutournix and like the ability to visually sex em. I hate vent sexing: is that lil bit of foam from a roo or a freshly bred hen? Do Texas A&Ms require vent sexing? Also, If I understand it correctly Jumbo Browns are just standard that that have been selected/breed for increased size - Yes? And is there a standard on how much larger they are?
