This is my first time incubating eggs, day 4 tomorrow and I have to add water, have been reading and it says not to open bator. will use a tube and syringe, how much water do I put? I will use warm water but do not know how much...is 1/4 cup enough or too much? Please someone answer - actually I cannot even see where the center part is that holds the water, will guess....Help

put as much as it will hold ... its okay to open the bator to put water in .. i do and everythings fine... also add a sponge it helps when they hatch

What kind do you have? If you don't have an automatic egg turner in it I read you do have to open it to
turn the eggs at least four times a day and our instructions say you can open it to add water.
In ours there are little troughs around the bottom center and that
is where you are supposed to put the water; idk either but we just filled up the trough thing to the top.
This is my first time with a bator too but I have been told that humidity and the right level is important,
so I will be interested to hear what others with more incubator experience. Idon't know why you couldn't
open it to add water; the hen doesn't stay on the nest 24-7, but the eggs hatch alright for her. Is yours a
still air incubator or forced air?

How often do you need to add water? Does it evaporate in a day? OUr instructions do say NOT to open the bator
for the first day after the eggs are set..so I'm guessing that means don't open it to turn the eggs, add water,
or anything for the first twenty four hours?

I have a Little Giant - Automatic egg turner & fan... I will open to fill center with water tomorrow...well I just read on the instructions to take the red plug out on day 18, well....I didn't EVER put any in...shoot..,do I put both plugs in or only one? What did you do? temp reading is 99.5 - Humidity around 38..this is what it has been for 3 days (no plugs) /what is your reading..

found topic "LG hatch along" answered many questions as I am using a Little Giant..conclusion 99.5 temp - Humidity 30-50 day 1-18
50-70 Lockdown...Different ways to add water.. Turkey baster...tubing...straw (kind that bends) ... also can add food grade food coloring to water to see water trough....leave a slot empty where you will be adding water...(wish I had done that)..someone lined the top of the water trough with marker so you can see it better...(I'm not sure I would do this) am just trying to remember as I type some of the hints...hope this will help someone.......only thing I am yet to see addressed are the little red plugs..In or Out...Good luck on your hatch ...

Thank you StormyMoon, Now I can go to bed...I have a plan with the help of all the kind people who encourage newbies like me..am no longer nervous to do this and am really looking forward to day 21....Thanks again

I add water when ever I need too... All instructions are going to tell you to do certain things... I did that at first and lost too many chickens.... if you are using a little giant... fill all 3 water trays and place a sponge in it... chicken eggs turn once a day.... if it would make you feel better do it at the same time everyday and just dont open it anymore if you do not want to ....

I open mine about 5 or 6 times sometimes more a day.... and everything does fine... they are just going by the books ....

need anymore help let me know

Everyone does it differently, I use one in and one out, and you will find many people never even use them at all.

Our manual says you take one out right away, and take the other one out on the eighteenth day.
Unless there is a problem with loss of humidity, and then you leave it in. It's just turning into
a giant keep-your-fingers-crossed, nail-biting experiment for me.
