Dyed Chicks

Thread Starter

Okay, well I've heard of this but never actually seen it. Then I was watching chicken videos on youtube, and videos of dyed chicks popped up in the sidebar. Well my immediate reaction is, 'those poor chicks'. I don't know if it's harmful to them or not, but it seems to be akin to tattooing fish (well that is harmful, often fatal to the fish) or painting turtles. I don't see how it makes them more attractive, I think chicks are heart-melting adorable anyway, even if it's harmless to the chicks, I think it's pretty stupid and I hate it when people use gimmicks like that to sell animals.

Anyway, what I want to know is:

1. Does it hurt the chicks
2. What do you guys think about it?

I can't learn chicken math, I already have a severe case of Multiple Tank Syndrome that I'm trying to medicate away.

I don't think it hurts the chicks at all.  The bad part is that it may entice people to buy the "pretty little colored chicks" for all of the wrong reasons.  Because of this it is illegal in many areas.

This can actually be done in the egg. Between days 11 and 14. I did this to a couple eggs. They are due Sunday. I mark chicks when they hatch anyway with a Sharpie so I know which chick came from which pen. The dying in the eggs will just last a bit longer on the chicks. I don't see a problem with it if you are doing it for yourself. Once you start dying & selling the chicks, that it when problems happen.

SOME, not many.

It is not harmful, and I see nothing wrong with it.  There are lots of people who got into raising chickens from purchasing Easter chicks.

Hmm, maybe THAT would be a good way to mark the chicklets and have it "stick" long enough for me to leg band it.  My attempts at banding youngsters usually end up littering the brooder floors as the now-banded chicks happily mix together.
