I'm used to standard breeds... we got assorted 6 bantams a week ago and I was wondering how different brooding will be. They are so tiny! I've had to clean pasties a few times (never had that with the standards). How long before I can stop checking for pastybutt?
Also, will bantams grow more slowly, or mature slower? At a week old, they have some feathering, but no noticable combage yet. Do I have to brood bantams longer than standards?
Thank you for the info!

anyone?

I brood mine just the same as the standards. It does seem to take them longer to grow, but it may just be because they're small to begin with

As far as how long to brood... I guess it depends on where they're going afterward. If you're going to let them run with the standards, I'd wait until they're fairly mature.

Thanks for the info! I have a banty pen set up for them until they are older. We are in FL so I hope to have them out of the house by 5-6 weeks old. It is quite warm here already.
As for sexing bantams, does that come later than standards or is it mostly dependant on the breed? One is a silkie and I know that will take longer to determine gender, still trying to determine breeds of the others

Here is my limited experirnces with bantams: They really surprised me at how well they do for their size, the word sturdy comes to mind. I raised 6 with 21 standards last year and did not lose a single chick. They do seem like they grow slow but I also think that is bacause they dont have far to go. I think you can tell their sex earlier than standards. Iknew quite early last year that I had 4 roos and 2 hens!LOL I really enjoyed them and got three more this year, I think I got at lest 2 out of 3 hens this year. I think that if I ever stop keeping laying hens I may still have bantams for entertainment!

Thanks for the info!
I still am amzed at how tiny they are, lol. Is there a resource for information on bantam breeds? I'm trying to determine what breeds I have.
I'll take some pics today and post them.

1/2 my flock is bantam and i raise them the same as i do my reg size chicks the only thing i've done different for them is i've made them a lower roost and when i raised their feeder/waterer i added a step

Same. They are small, and mine can fit through the fence of the run, but other than that they are sturdy little chicks.

Their combs did take forever to grow in. But they did.

keep checking them for pastybutt for a few weeks, better safe than sorry!

I learned the hard way that you need to put marbles in the waterer. My only little d'uccle laid down in the waterer and drown. I have never had that happen with any of my full sized birds.
