Where do you get food grade DE?

Thread Starter

I get my coop in about 3 weeks and it will need to be painted and bedded down before the chicks go out there plus it is still a little cool here.. and I have seen people using DE and that it has to be food grade.  Where on earth do I get this stuff from, what is it exactly and are there other uses for it? Im such a newbie.

Wife, mother to five human kidlets, and new mama hen to 7 chickies.
Buff Orpington - Penny (Lane), Lt. Brahma - Eleanor Rigby,Yoko Ono - Buff Laced Polish

I get mine at Southern States.  I mix it in their bedding, sprinkle it all over their run, and mix it with the feed when I pour it into the feed bin.

Happily owned by 7 fluffy butt girls: 1 BO, 3 BA, and 3 Cochins.  Also have 11 hermit crabs, 2 giant african millipedes, a ball python, and a wonderful irish wheaten terrier!  2 awesome boys who love them all!

You can also use Stall-Dri if you can't find DE.  Works just as good and you can pick it up at the feed store.  Sometimes finding food grade DE is hard.

DON'T assume what the garden center has is what you want!!! Insecticidal DE is VERY different from food grade - so make sure! our local feed stores all carry it in 50lb. bags. Not expensive.

I'm a Spring-Chicken-Mama to an EE, Buff Brahma, Barred Cochin, Welsummer, Barnevelder, SL Wyandotte, Blue Andalusian, Lavender Ameracauna(?), Buff Orpington, 2 Australorps, 2 Cuckoo Marans and a  "lavender" Ameraucana/EE Roo whose days are numbered. Oh, and three teenage boys, who aren't nearly as entertaining!

I have been looking for it as well.  I called both garden centers by me and they do not have the food grade DE.  Food grade DE has a very low percentage of DE in it ( I can't remember the percentage) but the garden centers had a high percentage by me.  So just check to make sure.
