[[[[[[...............We live in a very windy high desert farm, and we need need a breed okay with not being free range.............]]]]]]

I don't have chickens but I have a lot of strong wind and cold.  The wind doesn't bother my ducks and geese in the slightest.  I know that there are a lot of people raising chickens in this area, so it appears that the wind doesn't bother the chickens, either.

I can't free range because of the predator load in the area.  My birds wouldn't live 24 hours if I turned them loose.  They have safe fencing and a secure coop for at night.

They also use the brush shelters that were originally built as sanctuaries for the local quail.  Those provide a bit of a wind break and a bit of shade. There is a small brush shelter in each pen.  They weren't built for the ducks, but I didn't take them out when I got the ducks.

I think Walltenters is in Central Oregon.  She brought some of her Dominickers (sp????) to April's chicken swap.  You might check this year's Oregon spring chicken swap thread to see who is in your area and what they have.  I understand your predator problem!  I am surrounded by forest, the chickens are fast food take out for all the carnivores!

Anyone around here ever try breeding out a decent meat bird?

Sure.  I breed excellent meat birds.  Pekin ducks and Silver Appleyard ducks. Excellent meat, fast growth, excellent feed conversion, very nice temperaments, no health issues.

For Chicken, I raise Cornish Cross.  They are the specialists and I can't see any point in trying to reinvent the wheel.
