Florence, my neck of the woods! Howdy from Coos Bay! Let me know if you ever want to hang out and talk chickens!

When I order chicks I generally order through Ideal Poultry and split the order with a few of my friends. I have never had a problem with Ideal in the past, so when I do go with hatchery chicks I go with them.

I had the biggest scare of my life! I swear, I nearly had a heart attack, lost a lot of sleep, and even shed a few tears.

So, as you all know, I was gone for about a week at the State Fair. I had been getting calls a week telling me how good everybody was doing. So, everything was going great for me and there were no worries about the animals at home.

On Tuesday night my brother calls me and this is the conversation:

Me: "Hey, What's up?"

Him: "Well, nothing much. By the way, how many chickens are supposed to be in the shed?"

Me: "Um, let's see... 6 chicks in the white pen with the heat lamp, 1 little black chicken in the green pen, and Miss Peepers and her baby in the black dog kennel. There are also two pigeons and a rabbit in there, too."

Him: "Oh."

Me: "What? What's wrong."

Him: "Well. There's only one live chicken in there and one live rabbit and that's it. And a bunch of feathers everywhere."

Me: Nothing but silence.

Him: "Hello?"

Me: "Which chicken is it?"

Him: "A little black one."

Me: "K. Thank you. Bye." I said the last part a bit feebly.

I then burst out in tears of disbelief and disappointment. I was unable to sleep that night because I was so worried and was ready to drive home, but after a few deep thoughts and a bit of agony I decided it'd be best to wait until morning to make the 3 hour drive back home.

So, I rushed home, getting up at 6 in the morning and rushing home. Admittedly breaking the speed limit a ittle bit.

When I got home and went into the backyard, there were chicks running around everywhere, miss peepers and her chick were off in the neighbor's yard, and the pigeons were just flying around.

As it turns out, the cage doors had been left open and then the door to the shed was left open and they all had escaped. Nothing was dead, nothing was missing, everything was fine and dandy.

And I nearly killed my brother!

Last weeks pics of our babies... Need to get some new ones soon. Just wanted to show off our flock, friends who don't have chickens just don't understand our excitement.

Left to right... Sicilian Buttercup, Blue Silkie, Red Frizzle Cochin Bantam, Buff Silkie, Cuckoo Maran and (non-frizzled) Red Frizzle Cochin Bantam. We realized this week that our non-frizzle is definately a Roo. Silkies are 2 weeks in pic and everyone else is 3 weeks

Our Blue Wyandotte and Silver Laced Cochin (6 weeks in this pic) We have a Buff Orpington in this group too but she was off trying to be one of the bigger girls.

Dominique, Easter Egger and Barred Rock 8 weeks in pic

Flock of 11 now, RIP Buttercup (my baby boy's baby)... 1 EE, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Dominique, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Blue Wyandotte, 1 Silver Laced Cochin, 1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Buff Silkie, 1 Blue Silkie, 1 Red Frizzle Cochin Bantam and 1 Red Frizzle Cochin Bantam Roo minus the frizzle
