The Quest for Chickens in Whittier, CA - Page 3

I'm rooting for y'all in Whittier! I hope you find success in changing the city ordinances.

Luckily, I am in La Habra, which allows up to 20 mature birds, BUT....the coop needs to be set back 50 ft. from a domicile and 10 ft. from the property line. It's kind of a big BUT, because many properties don't have the size to be in compliance. So, for those considering a home in Whittier and wanting chickens, La Habra might be a good alternative.

I'm so sorry to hear that. sad.png you can try to post in the LA County Chicken Enthusiasts group on Meetup. There are occasional posts regarding people needing to rehome their beloved chickens.

Also, you can post on the BYC Southern California thread too. http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/161/california-southern/4230#post_15219433

Hi HPK,
Holy Crap,  I didn't know they were fining people. How much was the fine? .Also, can I ask what area of Whittier do you live in?.  I just moved to the Michigan park, Near Painter and La Cuarta st. area and was planning some illegal chicken keeping.

So that's a bummer how did they find out you had them?

Hi Link,

Hidden criminal, hilarious.:lau  Isn't that stupid?  100 pigeons (rats with wings) and no chickens?   I'm curious as to how it's okay to have 100 winged vermin as opposed to having 8 beautiful egg laying chickens.  Who got that passed?  They want money in the form of permits, which is fine (no pun intended), but are they raking in the dough with pigeon permits?  Is there a line out the door, or a waiting list?  The Whittier city Hall needs to be educated and bombarded with ceaseless pleas from would be chicken owners in mass.  I'm not a sixties child, teamster, or a political lobbyist, so I have NO IDEA how to go about doing that.  But I do know that Whittierites need to unite, organize, and systematically wear them down until they can't sleep and resort to counting chickens.  In short, legalized bullying.;)

Hey, I live in unincorporated Whittier, I have two red stars and an araucana I bought at the black smith's corner in Bellflower. And tomorrow I am going to the feed store in uptown to buy a white silky rooster, the neighbors won't mind because i give them free eggs. By the way, does any one know if red stars or araucanas can breed with silkies to have beautiful and healthy chicks?

Also, I love my chickens and I would do anything for them, let's start a chicken revolution here in Whittier

Hello all-  I was really excited after reading some of the posts,  in particular the one about chickens being legal in Whittier.  I just finished reading the complete thread to realize they are not legal :(.  What can we do?
