The Quest for Chickens in Whittier, CA

hello Whittier peeps. We are new to backyard chickens. so many questions...
In 1 week my child's school will be giving us 2 baby chicks. They will be 4 weeks old. I need to ensure that we get two FEMALES because Norwalk does NOT allow roosters. This will be my child's first pet, and I want to ensure all goes well. I don't want to have him give love, care, and respect to a chick that we will have to get rid of in a few months. How can I tell the gender of the chicks?
Thanks for any help.

Lots of cities are changing their laws regarding chickens and urban farming. Time to get Whittier on the same page. Msg me if interested on taking this to the city council.

I'm very sad that Whittier changed it's ordinance on chickens. I've had a hen since 2010 when the code allowed for hens. But between then and now the code changed and I was completely unaware... That is until my father upset a neighbor and they called the city on us for any little thing they could, my hen included. I had to move her to my grandparent's house and she's doing well, but I miss her very much. She's an old girl, and the thought of her passing while not home with me is upsetting.

We can keep exotic parrots in our homes, but aren't allowed to keep a domesticated bird like chickens? Sounds pretty backwards to me. (I wonder if I can get away with keeping quail instead.)

It would be nice if we could get this ordinance changed, but that would take a concentrated effort by many people in order to get the city to listen.

Hi all! I am new here. Is it accurate that it is nearly a 3k and a permit to get approval to have a few hens as backyard pets in Whittier? What kind of success have you all had in trying to change this requirement to meet the standards of most of the local cities. Thanks all

I have a beautiful healthy chicken that I need a good home for. I live in Montebello and will drive to drop this chicken off to someone who can give her a good home. Thank you! Sue Sullivan
