Love the pix of the silkie with the little chick! How adorable is that?!
One of my Easter Eggers went broody last week...aauuggh! I can't have her go broody right now but don't know how to break her of this. I keep kicking her out of the nest but she keeps going back, determined she is to hatch the golf balls. lol
Still can't post pix but I have a pix of my "lil mama" all hunkered down on her eggs.

Leghorns are great egg laying chickens. They are friendly to other Leghorns and can easily fly. The only problems is that they are bad in the pecking order and they can make a mess of the yard....

I will start by saying that I love Australorps. In fact, my very favorite hen is an Australorp. She is such a sweet chicken and just let's you walk right up to her to pick her up. She doesn't run...

That's fabulous. I've got the same thing going on. Two nights in a row now, I've had to grab her off the nest and stick her on the roost. She stays, but every morning when I wake up she's back on the nest...
I think she's getting the dog crate tonight
The funny thing is- we built a "broody buster"...but it is now acting as a broody condo for my momma!!! doh!
Also...Colby (aka...pig ) and Brie (a squirelly gray tabby)

Black Broody or mama B as I started calling her, with her little ones.

looks like I have a 3rd broody now! thankfully I only have 7 more potential Sumatra hens to go broody:P

I'm always shocked how people take something typed on a forum so personally :) If I say it here I have done it. No Bull poop from me. I'm not arguing, I'm stating what I see in MY flock of 10 years.I'm NOT P.C. If that offends please just block me :)

Just went into "lockdown"... meaning I'm leavin' momma the heck alone! (except I think I'm going to steal her away for 30 seconds tomorrow to dust her again for lice- just in case) Since Gesine was down to one lonely little egg, Jess (aka ItsAZOO32) graciously donated 3 of her incubated on the same day eggs for momma to set on. So now she's got 4! One silkie, a BLRW, a light brahma, and and blue wheaten maran. What a mix, huh? Good thing chickens are prejudice
Wanted to check in with everybody and see how everyone's progress is going.
Skywalker- how's the broody managment going? My EE is still feelin' the nesting- my Rock has since gone broody and been broken- a brief affair, but she's my vicious vicous girl! Sweet as punch daily- but when she's broody- watch out!
Stoneykill- Momma B is looking good! I forget if you mentioned- are the chicks her own? Or are they adopted? (i know she hatched them...)
twister- did that second chick ever hatch for your silkie momma?
Are beth, shiela and schellie still out there?? Doing good?
O boy people! This is it! It's happening soon!!

Could you put her in a cage in the coop?? That way she could see everbody and they can see her but can't get at her.
I have several of mine caged off in the coop so that they will maintain the breed. I currently have one silkie sitting, one cochin that has gone broody and one is the other area that has been sitting so hers should be coming soon. The roosters are in with these hens and seem pretty protective of the hens so I'm wondering if it's ok to leave the roosters in there or if I should remove them. This is the first time my hens have done this as well and I'm pretty excited. I also have at least 3 ducks sitting on eggs right now as well. Any ideas is always helpful to me. I'm just glad that Mother Nature is nurturing my crew and they are doing this on their own.

1 is hers. One I know isn't, it's little blues ( a broody I'm either trying to break the brood on, or get her to a safe area, she has a nest in the woods). The others, not sure. Just clean Sumatra eggs I saved incase someone went broody.
I now have 3 broody's. Mama B with her babies, Mama S due to hatch may 5th, and mama BB ( another black broody) who went broody yesterday and is on 9 eggs. My little Blue, a tiny blue Sumatra is broody, but in an unsafe spot. So being she is a ferrel, uncatchable little thing, I just chase her off her nest 3 or 4 times a day with the last time before dark. I try to entice her with great little nests, but she isn't having any of it.

Easter Egger is still broody.
And now...the Sumatra is too. Bummer. Bad timing is all as the "broody vacation spot" is full.
In other news...
Three baby chicks hatched overnight!!! I'm so exicted...they ar the cutest!
I'm hoping that at least a couple more will hatch today (there were 7 eggs total).
Do I need to do anything? Or just leave them be?
I'm a grandhenma today! lol
just chickfeed and water. Mama will do the rest!

yes, and when do we get pictures!!!
On another note- I had a "friend" comment that I must be a boiling pot of misdirected pregnancy hormones...I said- no, but my chicken was- trying to hatch golf balls- so I gave her eggs! Some people, I swear. Yes, all who hatch eggs secretly want to have hundreds of children! lol!
