Do chickens need windows?

I live somewhere that it gets so cold and snowy sometimes, the chickens spend very little time ouutside the coop. Although, covering part of the run with roofing has helped some to keep a clear area, they like that.

Anyway, chickens like natural light, windows are a way to do that. I have a glass basement style window on my coop, I close it in the winter so they get the extra light, and in the summer, I keep it open for more ventilation (covered in hardware cloth). I wish I had more in my coops actually.

I have been saving windows from our remodeling projects over the years, for the purpose of building my next coop.

I'm in the process of getting a new coop/run built. The roof sits north and south as close as I could get it with a compass. I am putting windows in the east and west sides for morning and evening light. I haven't decided on having electricity or not. I'm not really concerned about electricity but keeping the water thawed would be nice. I want plenty of light so I don't grab a snake that might be layed up in a nest munching on eggs! And of course light will help laying during the winter months.

Silly question, but while it is still on paper, do chickens need windows in their coops?
I am incorporating plenty of ventilation, but have a big wall in front wall where the roost will be and perhaps can incorporate a view.

My issue is drafts, cause while I"love" my pretend chicks dearly;) I ain't spending moocho bucks on a triple glazed double hung draft proof view (I do not have that in my own bedroom)

even Habitat for Humanity ReStore windows are in $40 or more and I have not spent that much yet onthe coop ( all recycled and donated by friends in exchange for pretend eggs!)

I Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Whether you add a small one or a couple big ones. windows are nice to have in a coop. You can easily get a double hung 2'x3' metal frame window at Home Depot for under 30 bucks. They are not double pane windows but they open and close and have screens. Natural light in the coop is great and you can still block off a nest box area for low light if you coop is a good size.

These two windows were 50 bucks total and provide great natural lighting
