Chickens carry tons of diseases... (CPS alert!)

So I don't want this to come off wrong at all. I have a friend that works for CPS in Texas and she's amazing. Truly an awesome woman. It isn't anything personal this is totally directed at the individual ignorant jerk.

Long story that I won't go into the details of, I had police at my house yesterday. My ex-fiance has been causing me trouble since we broke up a year ago and my life is going well and his isn't. He's just been a jerk and he accused me of stealing things on Thursday night when he was drunk and calling the police. I get police here and they ask why the door is shut and I said it's to the bathroom and I keep my daughters two 4 week old chicks in a box in there until there. Well apparently that wasn't ok. It's not in the laws or code here. I checked btw. So the CPS officer with the sheriff's office comes over. He proceeds to harass me about my daughter having her basket of clothes dumped out. (she did it that morning and she's almost 10. This is not strange behavior for a 10 year old or any kid.) He then tells me that you can't walk in my bathroom without coming in contact with chicken excrement and that it is an unhealthy environment and he is deciding if he can remove my daughter or not. I am so mad because he is telling me that my chickens carry tons of diseases and that all children put their hands in their mouths all the time and she can't go in to use the bathroom and not contact the chicken poo and then she'll put her hands in her mouth and get sick. Oh and that my bathtub must be contaminated as well because it's in the same room.

We all know that they are unlikely to jump into the bathtub because of lack of traction. I know they never have. I keep them in a giant 4 foot long blue rubbermaid tote with a heat lamp, food, water, and horse pellet bedding that we change out every few days. I also keep a long sheet of brown builders paper under them to protect my carpet. yup my bathroom has carpet. The kinda plasticky stuff. Sort of like astroturf. I hate it and I'm replacing it after I'm done brooding chicks with some linoleum I picked up. I started painting my bathroom before we got chicks but stopped to keep them in there.

So I just tell him fine and agree to whatever so he'll get out of my hair. My friend had come over, who is a lawyer, and she dealt with the other officers and got rid of them. My best friend came over and took my 2 chicks to her house until I can at least have a coop outside to put the girls in during the day. Odds are the CPS workers will come Monday anyway and then it's over. Here is my filthy disgusting chicken ridden bathroom just minutes after they were loaded into my friends truck. All taht was removed was their box and the paper that was under them.

This is where they were, next to the vacuum that was there for quick clean up and near the window for sunlight.

This is the rest of my bathroom.

I was painting the grey to cover up the yellow. I painted it all yellow but after 4 coats and still terrible coverage I gave up. did grey with a green trim, just had to stop for a bit.
Also, my daughter was thoroughly insulted that they would think she was stupid enough to handle chickens in anyway and not wash her hands, let alone go to the bathroom and not wash her hands. She said "what do they think, I'm 2?!"

It's become a bitter joke amongst us all. "I'm going to go lick some chicken butt guys!" and you reach out like you touch a butt and then lick your fingers or pretend to. Yup, because we are ignorant people needing to be enlightened. We keep chickens so we must be stupid.

I'm printing out facts about brooding chickens in your home, sanitation, diseases, so when they come to check to see if the chickens are out of my bathroom they can be informed and not ignorant.
These are my filthy chickens btw. Filthy.

Btw, I'm having a hard time finding the types of diseases that can be transmitted through contact with live chickens vs chicken meat and eggs. If you have any links for me that I could print out and collect for my research that would be great!

Can I ask you a potentially awkward question....are you a minority? Was there any possibility they were being ignorant in more ways than one?

Meow so sorry you have to go through this.    There are serious cases of neglect and abuse out there and nothing is done.  Yet a couple of chicks in the house and they are ready to remove a 1/2 grown child!

The system is certainly screwed up!  I hope everything blows over, as it should.

I'm a white, blonde haired, green eyed, single mother that is 31 years old with a child that has Aspergers syndrome and I'm halfway through a bachelors degree for psychology, which I'm then going to Northwest Nazarene University for my masters in clinical psychology following that my PhD.  My daughter didn't get home until after they left. I had to run to pick her up and then we came back for Elaine to board the girls into her car. I'm overweight. Like a lot but fully mobile and I don't look as heavy as I am. They treated me like I was an idiot and the only way he'd agree to just leave it alone and go was for me to just nod my head and say yes. As if he was enlightening me and he was helping me in my evil ways. I had told him. My 4 week old chicks are getting a big big for their box so we're picking up a coop and building them a run tomorrow. I couldn't go today because it was a school day. He didn't care. He wanted me to agree with him and say "I understand that having chickens in my bathroom is unhealthy for my child" That was the quote I swear. He said if I didn't go on the same path with him he'd remove her. My pride is less important than my child. Be assured my lawyer will be having words with the state dept. Also, my daughter does animal therapy and we started 4H and the chickens were for that as well. We were raising them from babies and she plans to show the Light Brahma's next summer when they are full grown hens.

I'm just so irritated. I wish I was exaggerating. I am not though. I've been told from a few local people here that there are a lot of issues with the system of CPS and officers in my area. I don't know if it's true but it feels like it.

Oh the SQUALOR!!  The plague will be spreading from your restroom at ANY MOMENT-run for your lives!!!  I can't help you with the disease question but you have my condolences for having to deal with these morons. My dogs are way nastier than my chickens. My chickens have NEVER licked their butts and then tried to lick my face. Not once. But these people probably have no problem with a pet dog or cat.  In fact, now that I think of it; everytime I've become sick it's been another human from which I've contracted the illness.  These strangers "visiting" your home posed more of a threat to your daughter's health and tranquility than those chickens ever could. OK, I'm gonna stop now before I REALLY get started. Some people.  Tomorrow will be a better day!

and ask anything you want. I did nothing wrong and I don't have a history of drugs, alcohol, anything. I'm a 4.0 student with a partial scholarship and grants to go to school. I'm such an awesome mom (my ex-husband says that) that her dad pays me enough to cover fixed expenses and some extra each month since he couldn't possibly handle all the things I do for her. Appointments, tutoring, school visits. My child is complimented so much for her excellent attitude and behavior. I went into psychology because of her disability and I want to help parents and children with disabilities so they can start out on the right path like I did.

I know right! My daughter is now freaked out about leaving any mess anywhere. She shouldn't feel like her home isn't safe for her. I know they visit homes that are really bad and the children are really abused or neglected. But coming into a clean house, especially a clean house that is still being renovated?! and treating the person like this. Unacceptable.
