Will light around outside of coop deter predators?

My birds are locked up in the coop at night thanks to an auto pop door. However, I was thinking of putting up a few solar powered spot lights around my coop to light the area around it and night and hopefully ward off predators like raccoons. Do you think a raccoon will care if the area it might be stalking is lit up and it would keep away?

What are your thoughts?

I doubt solar lighting around the coop will keep racoons away. My deck is lit with low voltage lighting at night and I still catch them walking across it. They are pretty bold. You might consider putting some lighting on a motion detector. That way it can help deter predators and provide automatic lighting for you for late night checkups. A persistent coon will likely eventually get accustom to the motion detector too though. They are rascals. I do think many other more skiddish predators would be deterred by motion detectors though.

we don't have raccoons in Austria so I'm no expert, but in built up areas with street lights and porch lights you still get raccoons raiding trash cans and the like. I can't see it helping much.

I saw a solar powered blinking red light online, that's supposed to deter ALL night predators but I can't see it myself.

I'm sure you could find a US website too, search for nite eyes/nite guard

I have a motion flood light on front of my coop. I doubt that it would keep a predator out but it does light up bright enough that sometimes it wakes me up so I can check out what's going on. The bad side of that is sometimes the wind makes it kick on.

Murrey McMurrey Hatchery has product called Nite Guard. I've never tried it, but it says it works for raccoons.

Protect your birds at night. NITE GUARD is a solar powered (no batteries needed ever) flashing, red light that, when positioned correctly, will repel night animals that could harm your livestock or your gardens. Scientific studies done in Europe have proven that all night animals share the same deeply rooted fear of being watched and therefore threatened. Remember being told to never look a cornered animal in the eyes as it represents a challenge? The specially engineered red flash of Nite Guard implies the eye of another organism and presents that very threat. These studies have also shown the color red to be a universal alarm color for all animals and humans. Stop signs are red in color for that reason. Protects against owls, coyotes, opossum, raccoons, fox, bobcats, muskrats, bear, cougar, wild boar, mink, weasels and many more nocturnal predators.

You could try a "Scarecrow" animal deterrent. It attaches to your garden hose, and is motion activated to suddenly spray water on the intruder. I used it for my pond, to keep raccoons from getting my fish and frogs. I just had to remember to turn it off before walking in that area..... I got soaked more than a few times!

I have a fairly bright security light right over my bird feeder and the raccons raid it constantly for the sunflower seeds.

So, I guess we all agree that nothing stops a raccoon. I do have hardwire all around and on a apron away from my coop. Was just hoping they'd go elsewhere if an area was all lit up perhaps. But clearly, that's not the case! Sigh!
