OUCH! Stepped on a nail, so what's the best way to treat it?

OUCH! The rusty nails and big sewing needle stories...why does this happen to us???? LOL Glad your babies didn't see it!

I agree - smaller needle doesn't hurt. Some people are better at giving shots than others. But I agree with everyone - tetanus shot - better safe than sorry.

Forgot to say thanks for the smaller gauge needle suggestion. I'll ask them.

Funny, I told my nephew to ask if they'd give the shot in his rear instead of arm, because we have lots of work to do next week, lol. My words are now haunting me.

A tetanus vaccine will not help at this point, even if you believe in vaccines. If you and the dr believe tetanus is possible from this wound you need them to give you the tetanus ANTI-TOXIN not the vaccine. Vaccine introduce a small amount of the virus into your body so that your body develops an immunity to it. If you are already exposed to the virus exposing you to the virus again will not help you.

Here is some info you may like to read http://www.vaclib.org/links/tetanusindex.htm

Pretty much the same thing happened to me a week ago, except it was muddy cage wire, not a nail. Urgent care, a tetanus shot (the doctors really do know which shot is needed based upon the information given) and oral antibiotics for infection (there was redness, swelling and pain). I can still see the puncture wound, but there is no longer pain unless I apply pressure.

They gave me the tetanus shot in my right arm (since I am right handed) as movement would aid in desensitiving the arm.

Thanks for the link. So I wonder if the tet shots or "boosters" that we get when we've had a mishap a few years after our last shot is actually the anti toxin? Honestly, I've never known there were 2 types.

Sonoran Silkies, thanks. I think you're right...I imagine the docs give which one should apply. I'll ask to be sure. And dang, so it just happened to you. That wire is wicked. Hope all is good now. Is it feeling better?

I went ahead and started antibiotics to get a jump on that part since the foot is pretty swollen right now, but the worst of it is around 4" of within the puncture area. I have to be kinda careful about infections and such. The last episode I had to have emergency blood transfusions so I wanna be safe but yet not jump the gun.

Thanks again to everyone. You're all the best.

This is correct. I worked in the ER and the docs use the new injury to convince you to get a "booster" if needed. If you are not already immune then the new shot will not protect you. It takes time to develop the antibodies.

Well, the wire is smaller, and puncture not as deep, but still was red, swollen and sore. No longer any, unless I put pressure on it--then it hurts. A couple of years ago DH got an infected puncture wound--from a pyracantha thorn--ended up on IV antibiotics--not sun, so taking no chances on that happening.

You're right, and I wish I would have now, lol. Even with boots on it would have still happened, but it wouldn't have went in so deep.
