what causes a "BLOW OUT"

I just had a hen that suffered Blow Out / Prolapse Vent, horribly suffered. I blame the advise I had read on this forum. I had read that warm epsom salt bathes and Preperation H. was the thing to do. DON'T DO IT ! ! ! Instead of my hen dying within hours, I did this and she laid there in a torturing death. I love my girls and really struggled with killing her. Some people on here call it culling but it it is still killing something ya love. Finally on the second day of her suffering I absolutely had to have mercy and cut her neck. As weak as she was she fought death. I know that I will struggle and suffer what I have done by trying to save this girl listening to the advise I read here. Please do not follow what I did. What horrible advise.

A word to consider: The advice you get here is free and predominantly given by enthusiasts and hobbyists. There may be certified poultry specialists lurking but it would be the exception. Many pass on info they have heard but not tried. Many pass on utter garbage that they thought up that may make some form of sense to them. Others give pragmatic advice that appear to work or is sound but for a different condition. It is possible that good advice was given but the wrong condition was assumed.

If your bird has a serious condition that is life threatening AND you can afford to take her to a professional then don't rely on the advice of armchair quarterbacks.

I can't afford a vet bill so I will listen to the advice from those who know more than me but you can bet your last paycheck that I will verify with a reputable source.

It's possible that you were given and followed sound advice but it was just her time.

My painful point is that you don't know because you don't have the diagnostic of a professional, and you may well be the one who was wrong, (not saying you are, just stating the possibility) and insulting good intentioned people doesn't help anyone.
