Urban chickens in Charleston SC

YAY! New victims....errrrrm.......customers!

I love the irony of N. Chuck calling them pets and Mt. P. calling them unwelcome in most places!

I sold a lovely rooster and hens to some folks from Mt. Pleasant, last I heard they had no worries.

Only one thing bothers me about that article. "If you leave fresh eggs out on the counter, their shelf life is longer." That goes against everything I have read on here. Not that I don't have two days worth of eggs sitting out at this very moment, but I thought consensus was that they do last longer if refrigerated?

I've never tested the theory, I only refrigerate the ones I'm selling because people expect it. The US is one of the few countries that does refrigerate eggs. I suspect they're thinking of washed eggs, really, rather than refrigerated?

There are a couple of fine points to be quibbled, but I am just pleased to see that Charleston and surrounding area are being enlightened and encouraged to have chickens!

Yikes.

"James Island: No farm animals are allowed in residential areas and that includes chickens, says James Palmer, a code and safety officer for the town of James Island."

And the last person interviewed is in Riverland Terrace? To that person: If you are a member here and have any problems, PM me and I will do what I can to help!

I know this thread is fairly old but have you heard of anyone raising chickens in Hanahan? Code says no domestic fowl. I just can't believe the old side of Hanahan would have an issue with it . . .

We have 6 hens in a W.Ash neighborhood and have been here since Aug. We were told there is an unenforced HOA which includes no fences over 6ft. I can look out the front door and see at least 5 6ft fences. Today we got a letter saying no farm animals, addressed to the previous owner of the house. He didn't even know who we were. When I asked the man about the fences, he said "well, that happened over the years, people were just not paying attention." I'm sure legally he can't pick and choose what he enforces. When I told him we were following all rules set down by the City, he told me I don't live in the city. Green Garbage can, I think I do. Any help, advice, etc. We told him we are not getting rid of them.
