Some Mourning Doves made a nest on a shelf in the gazebo in my backyard a week or two ago. Today I went out there and the mom and the two babies were on the ground. My dog killed one of the babies and the other I put back in the nest. The one that my dog killed was trying to fly away, so I assume they were on the ground because they were learning to fly. I am pretty sure that the baby that is still alive can't fly. The one that died was a little bit bigger than this one. The mom dove still hasn't come back and its almost dark. I don't want this baby to die too, because I don't think it will make it through the night without warmth. It does have feathers though. What should I do?

not sure what you should do, or if this is actually good for them, but I have raised a baby dove that I found on a river bank. I mixed chick starter and warm water and made it into a paste and fed it with a medicine sirynge about every 30 minutes at first and less often as it got older.

The mom will come back. It isn't true that if a person disturbs a nest the birds will leave it. The chicks are probably in their fledgling stage. They live for several days on the ground with the mom still feeding them before they can fly. The big issue is your dog eating the one left when mom kicks it out again. You might want to supervise the dog for a few days. Once wild birds get this big mama birds don't usually stay with them all the time in the nest, but that baby will cry and the mama will come back.
