Sierra Mountains-Gold Country-Foothills - Page 9

VERY HOT. We were indoors sanding our new flooring - so no A/C. Gave my girls some watermelon to keep them cool. Their first time trying watermelon - it was a HUGE HIT! :) So funny. Hopefully its cooler this weekend when we stain and seal the floors...

Good tip on the mulch - thank you :) And my husband was somewhat disgusted with me because I got the beer names backwards - my apologies - he had a Black IPA brewing and then last weekend whipped up a batch of Smoked Porter. Since you mention it (he’s wicked proud, this is a big deal) if you are interested in trying some of his beer, his Black IPA will be served at Old Town Cigar on Main Street during the Placerville Bell Tower Brewfest on Saturday June 30!  http://www.placerville-downtown.org/events_info/2012BellTowerBrewfest.html

Keep in mind that they are NOT a part of the Brewfest so you don't need to pay $30 for a ticket - they just happen to be having beer that day to be festive and asked him if he would like to bring his in. We came in a few months ago with his (magnificent) Stout and ended up staying til all hours playing poker. The beer was a hit. Real nice group of guys. Definitely a guy’s hangout but I think that's mainly because it’s typically men who do the cigars and poker thing - they really went out of their way to make me feel welcome. Really nice guys. They usually have chairs and a BBQ going in the evenings too – they’re lots of fun to hang out with.

I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.

He'd be most proud :)

Nope, don't need any roosters. Turns out that my Australorp, Eggroll, is a Roo. Hubby has renamed him Butch. I'm not experienced enough to be ambitious and want to breed chickens - nor do I want my girls to get beat up. Nor do I wish to be awakened in the middle of the night by crowing. I'm gonna wait it out, but Eggroll..er, Butch..may have to be rehomed.  Its very sad, HE was my favorite and most affectionate chick. He's been a mean bully lately though...

Nursery Pro? Dude! Wish I noticed that sooner! What can I do to get rid of these evil pincher bugs? They are eating everything in my garden!

I'm not a Nursery Pro (in the slightest!) but I have a great earwig eradication tip:

Take a newspaper, not any of the shiny sheets, just newsprint, and roll a few pages into a roll.  Set it in your garden and dampen it with water.  You might even put out a few such earwig traps. The next morning, pick up and carry the roll(s) to your chicken run, then shake 'em to unroll 'em.  Earwigs will fall out and the chickens will rush to catch and eat them.

Buncha Outdoor PET chickens, ducks, two Toulouse ganders, and four turkeys. Plus 2 wiener dogs, some bunnies and a rescue cat which owns me. Oh. And a house silkie....

Afew other options. wet newspaper works well too.

this is up your husbands alley. Clear plastic plant saucer. dig a hole put the saucer in it. level with the soil. insert beer (ok to swig the rest)

next morning pickup and dump beer and earwigs out. repeat first step

also a small water bottle with about the top third cut off. put in a can of oily tuna. put the top back on upside down so they can not get out

or maybe try diatomaceus earth

Oooh, I'll have to try the newspaper thing. I have a ton of saucers full of Keystone Light out there already - did a great job getting rid of the snails but didn't do too much for the earwigs. There are ALOT.
