black meat breeds, silkies ect....

My Malays are almost 3'tall,that will make them much larger

They are going to be sooooo awesome! Giant fluffy chickens with dark meat. Mmmmm, can't wait for the first BBQ. :weee:yesss:

I'm thinking of starting my project with silkies since that is what I already have. I kept the biggest chicks and am growing them out now but am uncertain what I want to bring in to help with size and meat. Leaning towards orpingtons or bramas. I am not familiar with either breed except for what I have read so far on here under breeds and a chicken picker app. Any info or opinions would be appreciated.

How do you cross a 3ft tall Malay with a 6-8 inch tall Silkie? I know my Orpingtons try but when they do catch one they can't hold on and fit themselves appropriately. Are you doing artificial insemination?

I have black chicks hatching out of blue eggs argh! So it must be my ac roo that's the daddy.. more eggs are hatching.

So now what do I do to get a fibro blue egg laying chicken breed now, since this is the direction things suddenly went into.

My ac are laying, but I'm giving them more time to lay before incubating any eggs.

My haffie is in with the bresse and laying big eggs along with the barred rock, maybe I should hatch some of them?

I have hatched at least 5 pullets from my Svart Hona roo over my Legbar hens and the cockerals are coming out a beautiful black barred pattern with the pullets as black as sin. I'm anxious to see what their offspring will be like. They aren't laying quite yet though. And I have some pullets out of a TetraTint hen and my Svart Hona roo that have come out just beautiful. I'll try to send pics.

To tell you the truth I haven't thought that far ahead yet. Will see if they can accomplish it on their own and if now will do the artificial route. Right now just trying to get some of both to maturity. God question though. I have seen some big roosters mount small hens and they just kind of straddle them instead of actually standing on top. Of course that was a really big RIR mix and an extremely tiny silkie hen. She was undersized even for a silkie. We will see.

They sound beautiful!

Awesome thread! I just bought six white silkie chicks last week, I thought they might be splash until I realized it was the black skin showing through. I have ten white jersey giants coming from Sandhill May 5. I will be putting one white jersey giant pullet in with the silkies. Probably be a year before I see the results of possible giant silkie black meat chickens. Regardless I figure they will be more hardy for our super long and cold winters.
Would like to find a cemani rooster for a decent price, I also have black langshan chicks coming, would like to do a cemani langshan cross.

If you like the idea of a white FM bird, you might like my birchen Kedu. Technically they are closer to Cemani as the birds have black skin and not clear skin. But it's not fair to call them Cemani since that designation is only for the all black color of Kedu. I have a separate pen of these birchen Kedu:
This looks more like belgian Ardenner, also quite rare
