***OKIES in the BYC III *** - Page 2572

It's miserable out there.  I'm glad I got out early enough to beat the rain.  The wind is throwing branches around.  I hope we don't have too many come down.  I want to mow in a few days and I hate to spend the first hour picking up fallen tree limbs.  

I lost a big RIR hen today.  She was egg bound on Saturday, passed the egg late Sunday, and this morning I found her in the corner of the coop under the roost.  She didn't look like she'd fallen, just sitting in the corner alone.  Her eggs have been getting larger and larger; and many have been double yolkers.  She was 3 1/2 years old and seemed in perfect health otherwise.  I don't understand enough about the mechanics of egg laying to know if the increase in egg size over the last year is symptomatic of a problem.  Does anyone know?

I'm headed for Shawnee in a bit and wondered if anyone in the area would like to enable me since I'm feeling like a mush head over this little one, or at least point me in the right direction.....

   As soon as I het the submit button on that last post I knew exactly what the answer was gonna be.  Actually I was thinking about it.  I have two coops in a shared run.  The small coop is abut 3-1/2 ft x 5 ft and the 3 older chickens have it to themselves.  The bigger coop is about 6 ft x 10 ft and the 10 red star girls have it.  The run is 20 ft x 30 ft and completely enclosed  with a temporary divider in it till everyone gets used to living together.  Is there enough room for all of them?  Also, after scouring the web for pictures, I think the little one looks like it's a partridge cochin roo.  Since I already have an older roo, I need a hen for this little guy. Any suggestions?

If I remember correctly they had posted the coupon code on their Facebook site & someone on BYC posted it here. Our Eco has been used several dozen times. All we ever have to do is add water. I would like the humidity pump, but I think for the money we can add water every other day.

Do you have an actual humidity meter to tell what your humidity is? If you do let me know exactly what you set them at and I'll do it the same way you do. Or do you just add water every few days and not keep track?

Thanks for the help! I'm getting very worried about getting them in the ground. I would have done it this weekend, but DH can't make up his mind about getting a chainsaw new or used  Not sure if I said this before or not, we've got to take down some trees in the area I want to plant them, I may just change my plans. Okay, what do you mean by amending the soil?
