You raised a monster lol!! We've had several bottle calves also. They're darling at 3 days old. When they're 6 months old and busting through 5' chain link, not so much. I'm sold on hot wire here. I've had a dozen or so dogs for 20 yrs and never once had one dig out or go over the fence. Hot wire is a must for dog owners. It's going around the chicken yards if I ever get them finished, too. They keep getting bigger and more elaborate.

I LOVE frogs and toads, too, OkieT.  I baby them around here.

I don't even feel bad laughing about that it's so funny lol!!!

Does anyone want a Dominique cock? I am thinking of listing him on craigslist for $10 just so nobody will buy him to eat him. I'd give him to someone on here free if they wanted to use him for breeding though. I'm not set up for more than one line at this point in time and he's out of a different line than the one I'm working with. He also beat the crap out of the cock I am using for breeding, so he has to be separated. It's no life for a chicken to be in a tiny little cage. :/ Anyway, reply or PM me if you want a rooster.

Oh I know I now send the kids to put the old eggs into the compost pile.  They think it is neat to crack them open but NOT ME!    I almost pitched the golden salmon marans eggs but noticed one was pipping this morning so they have until tomorrow to get with it.  Then I have to clean the hatcher so it is ready for the next batch on Friday.

We are going to invest in a hotwire soon.  Our dogs never chased the cats before that darn female dog showed up and now one will not let the cats within sight of the house if the female is around.  I guess he is showing off for her, but he is going to end up in doggy jail if he doesn't quit.

Just like having a little kid at times, he is not as cute as he wa when we 1st got him, so i am thinking that it will not be that hard to put him in the freezer later. Did get the knuckled foot straightened out mostly though. He stands at the back door and bawls if the door is open, still wants a bottle, or wants to be petted.

And the bigger he gets, the more trouble he will get into...and will be throwing around a lot more weight!   Looks like he is ready for a grow-out pen.

A ferret would be a possibility, because I'm sure they can climb, but I don't think a skunk.  Whatever it was had to go over a 6' fence to get into the pen.

And, I have to tell you, Nana, I told my bullfrogs yesterday that they sure are lucky they live here and not at your place.  I sat under the grape arbor and watched two great big ole daddy bullfrogs just sitting on the bank of our pond island and thought of you.  I won't let anyone kill the ones here because I enjoy listening to them too much. Luck frogs that I like the sound better than the meat at this point in life!

I'm still thinking ferrett or coon.   I don't remember cats going on a killing spree.  They usually get full on the first kill.

LOL We have sooooo many ponds and sooooo many bullfrogs.  There is a constant supply of croakers.    I really enjoy listening to them in the evenings.  But I do enjoy listening to them sizzle in a skillet too.

I was able to find 6 more 6 week old ones on Craigslist yesterday (2 barred rock, 2 buff orpington, and 2 lace wyandottes).  I had built a chicken tractor but have decided that a real coop will be safer so I plan to build that soon.  We are currently keeping the chickens in an unused horse stall until I can get the coop built.

Anyway Hi to all and I look forward to learning as much as I can from this site.  Thank you all so much!

welcome-byc.gif and sorry to hear about your chickie losses.

I'd have tossed the bunch too...not even thinking there might have been any survivors.

Hatch on...you will be getting more eggs...

darn it if I had a place for him and girls for him I would.  Wonder if hubby can get two hoop houses, and an a-frame built this week.  Then again he leaves Thursday at noon for Missouri so probably pushing my luck, lol.

If you think you might want him soon-ish, I'll hang on to him for you. I was going to keep him and sell him with two pullets later this fall, but as crappy as my hatches have been, I'm not honestly sure I'll have any pullets to spare.

TGPerg, thar's a beautiful boy. To my untrained eye he looks like my Cuckoo Marans boys. I tell ya-if those 2 boys hadn't grown up here and weren't tame like puppies I could replace them with a dozen bantams of some breed as much as they eat. I don't care for their color, they eat like horses....yet they're the sweetest kindest tamest boys and my daughter is who raised them so they get to stay.

Kass, I have a cat out here that I've had for about 5 years now.  He's neutered and declawed and he still runs the place.  He terrorizes the feral cats and even the dogs.  And, he loves to hunt.  He catches several redwing blackbirds every year and brings them to the house.  Also field mice, rats, and even a snake or two.  He just hunts for the love of hunting, though, and I don't think I've ever see him eat anything he's caught.  I guess he's a trophy hunter.wink.png  I'll admit he's not your average run of the mill cat, but he does just kill 'cause he can.  He doesn't bother my chickens, though.  Once he figured out they belong here, he never looked at them again.  But, whatever got into the chickens the other night did eat most of one of them.  I'm not sure that the rain didn't contribute to some of the deaths, though.  If they were frightened out of the coop,  it could've happened.  It's just weird that almost all of them were inside when I found them, though.

Luckily, I haven't had any prey birds hanging around.  I guess that's the one perk to not having many trees around the place; no place comfortable for them to hang out until opportunity knocks.  Or maybe those pigeons I see landing out in the pasture make easier prey for them.  Whatever it is, they never have come around the barn.   As a matter of fact, I've never even see an owl anywhere around here.  Hawks and eagles, yes, but no owls.  The worst predator I've had problems with were the blue herons.  One of them wiped out my koi pond a couple of years ago.  He ate about $700 worth of fish in two days.  And, we aren't supposed to shoot them-- I wonder if the wildlife dept. would pay the bill for the fish THEIR bird ate?tongue.gif

Their barring is similar to the Marans. I don't mind him eating, I just don't have space for him.

 Hi, countryokie, and welcome.

I hate that you lost your babies.  It's so disheartening and frustrating at times.

Good luck with that new coop!
