My place is in the process of gettitng hit by yet another storm! What happen to the 20% chance of rain???

Had a busy day, moved a few birds around. Our silkie that I was about to toss the eggs from under, hatched 2 yesterday & 4 so far today. Guessing they are eggs that she stole after she began sitting. The girls & I picked a bucket full of squash, cucs, tomatoes, and BUGS!!!! Lots of bugs & eggs...  Tomorrow is suppose to be green bean picking day. About 200 ft, if anything is left after this storm. The girls if we could pick tomorrow since it is suppose to be cooler & they promised they would be out in the garden @6 AM. Hope the storm doesn't beat them too bad.

Going to read the post I missed the past 24 hours or so.

To keep one of the guinea feeders dry DD stuck some metal rods around the feeder & drapped a tarp from an old swingset fort over the rods. I have yet to see how it will survive the storms, but she was very proud of her invention.

Rods and tarp. Check. I'm thinking of copying one of the goat shelters that i see around everywhere. Would give them some shade too.

Here is to hoping the rain is good and the storms do no damage.

Well we moved chickens around yesterday and any of you that have Games know that even the hens don't get along sometimes, well I lost two hens from fighting and we lost an Americauna roo to the heat I guess, had one chick that the cats got, all together in the last three days that is 7 dead so far, I hope the rest make it through, we really havent had any heat much yet. We need some more rain and will welcome any we get, have a good day all, Lynn 

Yes they will ce up on your porch, my mom had one on hers a few weeks ago, it was looking in the window she said. He porch is raised about 3 to 4 feet off of the ground, it has several steps to get onto the porsh. Gives me the eebe geebies !

At Newcastle last Sat. I bought a few bantam partridge wyandottes .  Trouble is I have no idea how old they are.   I could really use some help here. 

At what age should I expect them to start laying? I am so used to my orps and australorps. 

Oh man. It has been a day full of chicken drama. My little bantam Cochin mama with nine chicks was doing great with them. Then she got freaked out for some reason (probably all the noise in that brooder room from the older Dominiques and the guineas). She started pecking at her babies. First I moved her to the outside section and put the guineas in the middle and she calmed down. Then she started pecking the babies again and I took her out to keep them safe. I put her back in the bantam ark and the silkie beat the crap out of her. I never thought a silkie would do anything like that. I watched her through the day, but it didn't really improve, so I brought her back in the house. Right now I have her in a freaking upside down langstroth hive with pine shavings in the lid and a screened bottom board as a top because I am plumb out of chicken spaces. In the "weird but convenient" news, my Dominique hen's clutch was supposed to hatch on Friday the 8th, but her babies are hatching today. So, tomorrow morning I will move the Dominique and her babies out of the sunroom and into a big dog crate in the garage, and I'll move the bantam cochin into the broody box. Gah. I'm going to bed.

Elwood got it first.   Black rat snake.  Sure glad I don't have copperheads in our yard!!!  Yes, they come onto the porch, the deck, in the garage and I've found them in the garden.  I'm getting ready to work around the barn with Round-up to keill anything weedy that could be cover for any snakes.  Roger saw a big yellowbellied snake the other day and it is different from the black rat.  He wasn't fast enough to kill it before it disappeared.  So I'm on the hunt.  I'm setting up the ceramic eggs and golf balls in the nests and putting out the minnow trap.

No real fencing other than 1/2 inch hardware on the window and 1 inch chicken wire around the bottom of the floor pen.  Must have come thru the layers entrance and then thru the 1 inch wire.   Made me sick to see the dead roo and then see it was eatting another.

If a snake can get it's head thru a hole, the whole body can follow....on and empty stomach.  And they aren't very fast when they have their mouth full.

LF Wyandottes lay at about 7 - 9 months...
