When you say get rid of ,does that mean destroy? Is there anyway you can give them to someone to preserve? Surely they won't just dump them out and destroy them. That would be a horrible shame. You might have to get a news station involved to expose such neglgience and maybe find an alternative home. Your right that would make a person depressed. We need to value the old things more.Good luck and hope you can figure something out.

hi guys- welcome to all the new folks!

sadly i lost one of the chicks this morning, but the second seems to be bouncing back- still not sure what it was,.

meanwhile, licorice, my cochin broody from heck hatched out 2 eggs from boaz and ginger his oegb hen, although i don't think they are serama, possibly leftover from bfrancis pen??

Here are the new chickie doos they are beautiful.  I put them under my broody Skyfire tonight, but took a few pics before I put them out.  Thanks poco for hatching them for me, and banjoe for the eggs.  None hatched naked yet, there may be a few more to hatch over the next day.

SDS- sadly you may never know- it does happen, she was in a new place, it could have been something hidden before you got her, don't blame yourself, there is alot of things with keeping chickens that happens, you learn from them and appreciate the beautiful birds no matter how short of time they may be part of your family- i have found a hen that way, and never did find out what happened- hang in there, are you needing a replacement?

Aaww, I'm so happy for you :-) You're lucky-you don't even have to raise them with a broody.

Robin, the chicks are adorable. They look like the little Silver Duckwing colored chicks I've had.

Thanks for the support everyone.  I'm just really bummed.  We spent a lot of time getting ready for the birds and I was thrilled when we got them to see how healthy and active they were and then this.  I think I'm going to get one or two small (8") oscillating fans to attach to the rafters in the coop to run during the day.  I really didn't think it got that hot in there but I don't want this happening again. 

Artsrobyn, eventually we will replace her but until I make sure that the rest of the birds are doing really well we will just stick with the three we have for now.  They were all really active tonight.  My daughter took them a nectarine and fed it to them and they enjoyed that.  The australorps are getting more used to us and act like they want to eat from our hands but just aren't quite sure yet. 

My daughter has now named the remaining buff "Rose".  She wanted to name her "Pecker" but we decided that wouldn't be age appropriate.  She wants to name the two australorps but can't figure out how to tell them apart.  She wanted me to mark them somehow and I told her she would just have to come up with some other way to tell them apart.

Thanks all for the answer to my mysterious tree growing in my fence. We have redbuds in the front yard so I was pretty sure it wasn't one of those but I hadn't considered catalpas because I've never seen them around here. We go out to the salt plains though and they are all over the place out there. I brought back some bean pods to use in my weaving last year so I wonder if I accidentally planted some beans that grew. Now that I know what they are I think I'll move a couple to the front yard.

Letting a "sort of" broody hen have a few eggs to see what she'll do with them. She isn't sitting on them completely all the time but she does stay on them all night and most of the day. She gets off them to let others lay eggs in the nest but sits in the next nest waiting then she'll climb back in and tuck all the eggs under her very carefully. We figure we're paying for feeding them if we can raise a few of our own to send to freezer camp, so much the better in these uncertain times.

The ducks are finally doing the mating dance ... our swedish blues or blacks (we don't really know - they were just too cute) have paired off and our buff/runner has taken up with our khaki campbell. I don't think they're quite old enough to lay yet but I'm sure that will come soon enough. We were just thrilled that the males weren't fighting with one another and have each got their own girl.

Well, off to bed. I have to work in the morning. First day this week. Wish it was more often.

When you read an old article written in 1943, they had a different perspective from books you read now on WWII. They didn't know then we were going to win.
Maybe it is time to retire.

kass- love the secound one it has nice dark skin and multiy colored legs   have you looked to see if they are carryers for scaless yet ??
