I have several cockrells I am going to cull today unless someone would like some bug eaters.. If you would like them call me quickly or send a PM soon, they will not be here at the end of the day today.

As long as they think you are a challenge to them they will fight , I think the idea of trying to hold them and get them use to you is pretty good if you have the time.

I couldn't have said it better myself! I agree with you 100%

I know some people beat the tar out of them and kick them and all that....but sheesh-they're birds and we're humans. We can outsmart them.

He charged me as soon as  I opened the pen door.   this was a 1st.   The other time a grabbed him and held him for about 5 minutes and that calmed him down.   What did you feed him?

I hadn't tried the treat method, if I'd have kept him that's what I'd have done though. He got 1/2 Nutrena AllFlock & 1/2 Game Cock feed (the stuff in Newalla) when he was here as far as feed. I'd give them corn and watermelon but I didn't sit down in their yard and try to tame him with it. I was too disillusioned that my beautiful rooster I'd looked for long and hard for was a butthead hit.gif

The other two seem fine, very indignant that I dusted them this morning, roo was puffing and squaking up a storm when I put him down LOL. The girls in the egg layer pen were a little indignant but all was forgiven with a little scratch grain and fresh grass!

There's a 99% chance that the Sevin dust is all you'll need. I use either generic Frontline (from Ebay) or Ivomec Eprinex every 4-5 months as a preventative for lices & mites (it was probably lice you saw-super common). Those are the 2 products I tested personally myself on birds I'd gotten at an auction so I know for a fact they both will kill lice in 24-48 hrs without dusting or anything else. Lice spend their entire life cycle on the bird (unlike mites) so if you treat the bird you're usually good to go. Lice are the teeny tan/brown specks you see swarming all over a bird moving around pretty quick. The easiest place to see them is around the bird's vent. Mites are different and I've never yet encountered a bird that had mites. I didn't know the difference at 1st and thought they were the same thing. They're like the difference between fleas and ticks on dogs.

Haven't gone back to read the 85 posts from yesterday yet...will do that when I get back from town.

Got to go to town for some extra big feeders and shavings for the houses.  Also need some more livestock dust for the dustboxes.

Spent the last 4 hours this morning cleaning and spraying the pens and coops and getting ready for the next three weeks of 100  plus temps. Did some sorting and shifting of birds to outside pens and  four in wall cages getting shots and special treatment.  One is my favorite cockerell from the F1's.

Heat is getting to many down.

Let the older birds out to free range this morning for a couple of hours while I did the changing and cleaning....looks like I will do this for the next several weeks.

Cleaned and sterilized all water and feeders and added electrolites to all the water containers

Moved all the cochins inside and separated out a pen of cockerels.for freezer camp.  Also set up hoses with spray misters for the outside coop pens.

Still need to refill the dust boxes.  Will go get sand from the dry patches in the pasture when I get back from town.

That's a great link that did experiments on it. It looks like 7-8 months minimum.

WOW, that's pretty crazy!  If we have eggs that are getting close to a month in the fridge I boil them and they just seem to disappear around here - of course i can't seem to keep eggs longer then a week most of the time.

Why would you throw them in the trash????  Feed them back to your chickens (after you cook them so you don't encourage egg eating.  Or even to your dogs they love them.
