***OKIES in the BYC III *** - Page 4058

I have never had Leghorns but I understand them to be very flighty. If you have kids and want birds that don't mind being held I would choose a mellow, friendly breed. I have cochins and they are very sweet but aren't great layers. Most breeds are friendly if they have been interacted with often starting when they are chicks. Everyone is right about the auctions being a place to get chicks. Also a lot of folks on here have chicks hatching soon.

hey guys- gave one of the eyesight challenged silkies a bath, he had this kind of crusty area on his neck, almost like scabs? any ideas- here are some closeups

Hi BYC okies! I'm T.
Wanted to get to know you all & tell you about my flock & its happenings since my first posts. It has grown A LOT especially in this new year. Ive learned so much from you all (usually just lurking as I didnt want to intrude or be a butt-in-ski on conversations I dont really know about) but as Ive been growing the flock & gaining knowledge & the courage to expand, I want to get to know other folks here & maybe make good connections with other okie peeps.
Ok- I started with my late fathers "old girls" then bartered with a fella from walters for a bunch of pullets (had no idea what I was doing, just picked the ones I liked) a barred(french?)cukoo maran, a bantam Brahma, splash laced red wyandotte, a blue andalusian, 2 leg horns(?I could be wrong on some as I am a newby) & 3 EE's. Almost all have just started laying in dec- jan.! I'm so happy!
Then I bought three barred rock pullets(one turned out to be a little cockrel) a black & a white pullets that are about six mo. old. Now I have finally found two young EE Roo's that are good boys & my girls love them. (Even the old hens!!)will post pics as I could use guesses as to what mix of breeds they might be
Last week I purchased 10 buff orphington & 5 white laced wyandotte chicks 2 to 2-1/2 week old!(OMG they are SO cute!) & ended up coming home with 5 baby ducks as well. Couldn't help myself!
Now that I have told you about my flock I'm so excited to say I finally got my very first olive egg saturday! TWO today! I am so happy to share with peeps like me who love a colorful egg basket!
I'm working on converting an old Moble home into a breeding/coop so I can start raising pure's as well as my pot-pourri of lovely ladies.
I look forward to learning more about breeding and egg colors as I now feel confident to try my hand at hatching my own.
I'm trying not to get too excited as I am just learning & so many things can go wrong, but I have my eggs stored & am running my incubator (pre 24hr) with high hopes of success in 21days! Setting tomorrow (if I can find a thermometer/hygrometer in the morning)!
I will also post pics of the nursery soon. I haven't even had time to take pictures yet.
Its a lot of work- but its fun work!

Hello. Sounds like you have a veery exciting plan. I'm just getting back into chickens. Actually, I never really got out, just slowed down a lot. Currently, I've been without chickens for a couple of days and I already miss them. I have some ordered and scheduled for delivery in March. I have to completely redo my coops and pens.

Hi everyone. I've been a long time lurker, but just recently bought our first chickens and then jumped straight into hatching eggs. We have 11 chicks and hope to have up to 60 or more before march.

We live in logan county outside of Guthrie.

I think I bought some eggs from Okieridge this weekend too Thanks!

Good morning folks! It`s another frosty morning here in NE Oklahoma! A hot cup of black coffee sure makes 23°F a little easier to deal with! It`s suppose to warm up to 50°F, not bad for January! I hope y`all have a great day!

 

i bought two chicks at attwoods three years ago one is still going strong the other died last year do to the heat. One was a OEGB and the other a bantam cochin  and he was mean allot of flocks say cochins are sweet but he sure wasn't so sometimes it depends on the individual as well.

okracefan mentioned auctions in Blanchard and Newcastle.  Can anyone tell me anything about when they are and what to expect?  I've never been to one but it sounds like fun.  OH by the way....Good morning everyone.  :-)
