the only thing with sensor ones that close at dusk is if it gets stormy through the day, your door is going to close and lock your chickens out. a timer is the easiest.

During the winter I use pieces of plexiglas that was cut to fit. This summer I am going to use hardware cloth cut to fit so they get ventilation at night. I certainly hope the hardware cloth works against possums, that's what got in last summer and killed two of my chicks and bit the last point of Cleo's comb off. I have a fenced in run off the coop, but the possum got in 'cause I had the doors open for ventilation. It was a really hot summer. I don't have problems with raccoons here, never saw one, so hopefully-----------
Update: DH installed the hardware cloth. Works like a charm . I came up with the idea of using a safety pin to hold the hardware cloth in place. It slides up and down poifectly
Does the Add-A-Motor come with good instructions? I'm nervouse about constructing the dor and having it work properly. I like the idea of it being solar powered, but I doubt I'll go that route. What happens if it is cloudy? Or snows? I just want one that runs on a timer, keeps them safe, and isn't too loud. I'veseen some that are very loud, and I don't think my neighbors would appreciate that at 6am. Add-A-Motor didn't seem as loud as some of the other ones in the videos I've watched. Think I'll be purchasing one, but I just want to make sure I know how to use it..lol
Hubs said, yes, it was pretty easy, took about 10 min. The instruction booklet that came with the motor told the type of fishing line to use. Something like 60-80 lbs.
