Swollen side of face, Cyst Surgery - Page 3

I use a 16 or 18g needle on a syringe, inject the needle into the swollen mass and slowly pull on the plunger.  It's a bit slow going, but sucks it out if it hasn't solidified.  I do it by myself (the family seems to always disappear when I mention 'bird' and 'sinus').  I just sit on the floor with the bird between my knees.  Once the needle is in, they hold amazingly still so my hands are frre to work the syringe and plunger.  I have never been sure if they are grateful that I am taking the pressure off or just terrified that if they move it will rip their face open?  I do that to give immediate comfort while the antibiotics start working.

Often in birds the puss turns into a firm yellow mass. If it is at that stage then you must massage it out through an opening. If it was still firm but fluid like, then you could drawl it out with a heavy gauge needle by inserting into the swelling. For further reference TSC carrys disposable scalpels. Since it is now open, keep massaging the mass until it pops out. If the hard puss is not removed it will not heal. Flush the open wound with sterile saline. Unplug his nostrils by gently pushing on the inside of the roof of his mouth and massaging towards you. It will put pressure on the sinuses and expel from the nostrils. Give injections of Tylan 50 or the Baytril for at least 3 days. Try to keep wound clean, apply small amount of nepsoprin or spray with vetracyin.  If it was from fighting it will heal in time, if it was from an illness you will have to be careful and keep him away from other birds. There may be one more very thin membrane of fascia that is holding the puss ball in.  See the small blood vessels that are showing, these are feeding the thin translucent layer fascia.  Cut at the ball, looks like the cut on the bird is wide enough to get it out but it is just being held in by that little bit of internal "skin" and needs freed from that.

I don't know about peafowl but if I had that on one of my other birds and it is definitely fluid I would slice an area avoiding the veins as best as possible to reduce the chance of bleeding. Oh, poor baby. I would love to see pics after you get it excised...please

I agree cut the other layer of stuff a push it out. The thing looks just like it did on my BS hen. Separate him for a day or two from any other birds so they do not peck it.

Yep, cut where there is less blood vessels, the skin will stretch so it doesn't need to be very big, and massage that hard lump of puss out. make sure to get all of it. Flush it out and apply an antibiotic ointment. Massage the roof of mouth to loosen any stuck in sinus. keep him on an antibiotic for a few days. trim his toenails to keep him from scratching up the area.
