Got A Couple Question's About Mandarins&Woodducks please. ((:

I have read your other posts, and yes you still have to get the Ohio permit for any federally listed migratory birds. Be it teals, wood ducks, mallards ect.

You also have to have the federal permit (not just the 3-186) to sell, give away, or otherwise rehome/dispose of any migratory listed bird such as the wood ducks, teals, mallards, ect.

I know you want everyone to understand you wish to provide the best for the birds, but the constant posting of your financial commitment isn't needed. Everyone who raises birds is well aware of the costs, and not impressed by someone's claims of financial out put.

Money doesn't make a good owner, reading, asking questions, and educating ones self on the wide variety of needs is much better. Not all birds share similar diets, migratory birds are a commitment to proper housing, permits, and dietary needs. Not all migratory birds are for first time owners (newbies).

So the short of the long is:

To own migratory ducks in Ohio,
  1. you buy from someone federally licensed
  2. you get the 3-186 form from the seller
  3. you get your Ohio permit to keep the migratory birds

To sell, rehome, or give away any migratory birds you:

  1. Have your Ohio permit
  2. have you 3-186 forms from where you bought your stock
  3. you apply for your own federal permit which allows you to sell/rehome/give away migratory birds.

No mandarins are not listed on the federal migratory list, SOME, not all states still require you have a permit to keep them though. When in doubt call your states fish and game department (or what ever they are called) to clarify what they require from you to be in compliance.

Some states have housing requirements as well, it always best to comply, then to risk fines and loosing the birds because you failed to follow the guidelines.

In state of Ohio's migratory law, in the game bird section, mandarines are not listed.
Also, I got a male wood duck and the gentleman by mistake has given me a female mandarine.

Instead of giving me a 3.-186, he wrote down his license number and what he sold on a piece of paper.
If push come to sub, I can produce that to the state since the mand is not very organized. Also, I may get rid of the wood duck on
monday since i do not want to deal with this in my back yard at all. There are other nice ducks such as blue wind teal or green wing teal
that are colorful. Hobby does not need to turn into nightmare since I have no intention of breeding or selling them.
First you can not just get rid of the wood duck. Once you got it you are stuck unless you get with the breeder you got it from and they take it back. You have to have the federal paperwork to do anythign with it.

Also Bluewing teal and green wing teal require the same permit. Any wild waterfowl except for a mallard that crosses over any part of the US requires Federal papers to sell or dispose. A Breeder will give you the transfer paper work but it is your responsibility to get teh sale/disposoal license. The breeder is required to turn in a copu of your signed form to the US fish and wildlife so they know you have them. Before you get waterfowl you need to check the list or buy from a good breeder.
