Rabbit hutch for chickens???

Thread Starter

I've wanted chickens in our small, suburban backyard for a while.  A friend has offered to give me what she used as a rabbit hutch.  It is a wooden box about 2 x 4-5 feet in 2 sections connected by an archway.  It has a mesh screen on one side and a roof.  It has legs, and is about 3 feet off the ground.

Can I use the former rabbit hutch for chickens?  I assume I will need to build a ramp for the chickens to get to the ground, and perhaps enclose an area for them to roam without danger from cats in the neighborhood.  I am thinking of 2, possibly 3 chickens.

I would appreciate any help you can provide!  Thanks

Hi  Dawnn,  the cage I used for my chicks was basically a rabbit hutch or could be used as such.  In fact where we got it we almost bought a rabbit hutch the only difference in the two was the rabbit hutch was 6 inches taller and the door was tall not long like the one on mine.  I am sending a picture of the one I used. I would use one if I could have. Hope it helps.  Trudy:jumpy

Hi Trudy!

We almost bought the one you have, but opted to go with the rabbit hutch by Ware (from Tractor Supply) because of the tall, skinny door. I had visions of opening the door (on the one like you have) and chickens flying out everywhere...lau

We use ours mainly to break up our broody hens but we're using it as an "intoduction cage" right now to integrate/add some younger birds I hatched in the bator to our existing hatch.
