my oliver egger mutts crowed first too. My 15 week EO cockerels are not crowing. My older cockerel started crowing at week 18 or 19.

bucka, post some photos of your roos. it will be nice to see what you have to choose from.

Oh, thanks. I'd love to have some feedback on which ones I should keep. I was planning to take photos today, until I picked up my camera and discovered the batteries are dead. Recharging right now.

Is it crazy to try to keep 2 roosters in the flock? I've never done that, but I suppose I can get rid of one if it becomes an issue.

It's not crazy. Chickens die, so you should have a backup.

who asked for pics of mr. sinksalot? you got it!!!!!! this is only part of the EO flock, they won't hold still. i only got him and the two speckled girls. will try AGAIN for the others.

I am keeping 2 roos - rare as hen's teeth and if something happened to one you would be out of luck until growing out a new one.

I wanted to see Sinksalot! He is quite handsome. His coloring is a lot like one of my young roosters, but mine is smaller than the others, so I'm not sure I will keep him.

I also saw on the other forum a few before and after photos, and I was surprised at how much the rooster coloring changed (darkened). Maybe my large anemic-looking roo will develop more color in time. I hope to get photos tomorrow.

Good point about the roosters, ronott and 1mutts. I've been lucky here. I've only lost one bird in just over 2 years, and she had some reproductive infection. As long as they continue to get along, it would be nice to have a choice of roosters (not to mention I can't seem to make the decision to get rid of any of them).

Other than the ones that died in shipping as chicks, I have lost 4 in a year and a half. One was liver rupture, one trapped beside the eco glow, heat killed one and I had to cull one last week at hatch--intestinal rupture.

It's always sad, but it is the way of the farm and pets. Given that the productive period of a chicken and Rooster is realistically four years max, you don't want to risk losing time by the untimely death of your Rooster.

here are some photos of mine at 16 weeks. I'm keeping two roos.

first my yellow legged roo with good coloring.

and my secondary roo with white legs and little more black then i think we would like.

Annie my only female to breed with right now. she has white legs but good coloring. White legged roo behind her.

Momma. she has a crooked toe so i'm not going to breed her. She is 5 weeks older than Annie and her comb and wattles have barely started to grow. I think she is a late developer. She is also 'deer' colored.
