Two roos out of the same batch - I'm liking the one on the right...

I'm still working on the pop door and ladder out of the coop, so I let them out by hand to stretch out and run around with supervision. These guys lineup at the big door for me to lower them to the ground - then after they've run around for a half hour or so and gotten chilled, they come gather around my feet for the elevator ride back up.

Who - me spoil chickens? Nah!

Man I wish I had that roo on the left! He would be perfect for what I'm working on.
Looks like they've got you trained, lol. Are the kids enjoying them? Can you see any difference between the EO's and your other birds?

Can you tell any difference ?!!

James that's going to be a redundant question at some point in the very near future, but until one actually has a relationship first hand with these guys it doesn't quite make sense, to your credit you did get this point across way back when you first started the thread and I was looking for them at this time and now I see it for myself...yes there's a huge difference

Initially it might not be obvious but as the days progress with new chicks things start happening differently..and now I actually worry I'll step on one by accident as their curiosity and lack of fear make them so bold and I don't particularly handle my chickens that much, I theorize if they want to be tame they will be if they don't that's fine too but these guys all of them are super steady.

But thanks again for putting them in my coop I can't wait for my first eggs !

Funny you should say that ThatBloke, I have that peripheral vision for EOs under my feet too! Just lately it's my grandaddy roo, doing a little jump with the food clucking noise when he sees I have the scratch scoop. I never had him loose with all the girls in the big coop at winter before (he's earned it) and he's learned the routine beautifully. The more you handle these the more you see the difference. If they are not very tame by 4 weeks, pick them up once or twice and they'll be all over you!

It's hard to be certain til we mark each one, photograph and follow it, which I hope to do this spring.

I'd say at hatch, the brighter yellow the better, some that look paler yellow at hatch, end up as white I have a roo with that I have pictures of as a chick, other legs stay yellow or get yellower. You can't really see what you are going to get til about 8 weeks, but the blue/grey if there is any seems to glow through a little earlier, say 5 weeks.

I don't think I posted this before, but I just thought this may help anyone with the young chicks trying to sex them or wondering when they can. There may be a few of you at this stage. They are not easy but you do get an eye for them like any breed. The first pic of the two in my hand, the big chick on left turned out male (very light color) and little chick on the right is female, she is small and mousy and I won't be breeding her.

ah, i wish i had taken better notes with my chicks...i had such a good hatch i think i was almost dizzy from excitement. i had a few that were positively neon yellow, so pretty, but of course, much harder to tell them apart now.
